Not content to simply follow the 'anything to protect American lives' mantra, freshman Representative Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) has introduced a bill to prohibit mandatory full body scans at airports. Chaffetz states, 'The images offer a disturbingly accurate view of a person's body underneath clothing ... Americans should not be required to expose their bodies in this manner in order to fly.' He goes on to note that the ACLU has expressed support for the bill. Maybe we don't need tin-foil sports coats to go with our tin-foil hats.

Link to the bill
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c111:H.R.2027:

"[Barry Steinhardt, head of the ACLU technology project] said passengers would be alarmed if they saw the image of their body. 'It all seems very clinical and non-threatening -- you go through this portal and don't have any idea what's at the other end,' he said. Passengers scanned in Baltimore said they did not know what the scanner did and were not told why they were directed into the booth. Magazine-sized signs are posted around the checkpoint explaining the scanners, but passengers said they did not notice them

"Body-scanning machines that show images of people underneath their clothing are being installed in 10 of the nation's busiest airports in one of the biggest public uses of security devices that reveal intimate body parts. The Transportation Security Administration recently started using body scans on randomly chosen airline passengers in Los Angeles, Baltimore, Denver, Albuquerque and New York's Kennedy airport. Airports in Dallas, Detroit, Las Vegas and Miami will be added this month. Reagan National Airport near Washington starts using a body scanner Friday. A total of 38 machines will be in use within weeks."

as has been said so often by the 'conservatives' on this board these extra security measures should be of no concern if you have nothing to hide!

  Yep-- its kind of comical....All those intrusions into persons lives, privacy, or rights were just hunky dory when Bushies were proposing them-BUT- now that a Dem is in control they're all up in arms...  :p

--------------------------------

MsSage-- did you see the article I posted about the fellow that was jerked off the streets of NY- flown to Syria so he could be detained and tortured just on the word of Bush saying he was a terrorist- and now been released and cleared of all accusations?...

But now you're bent out of shape because Obama wants to put some Judicial and Legislative review over such type detentions :???: :p

As I asked you before why is it ok since it was done before its ok now?
At what point do we stop the madness?

Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

ACLU Statement on Airport Body Scanning Machines (6/6/2008)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: (202) 675-2312 or [email protected]

The following can be attributed to Barry Steinhardt, Director of the ACLU’s Technology and Liberty Project:

“The TSA’s announcement, as reported today by USA Today, that it will be expanding the use of whole body scanning machines to 10 airports,
is a disappointing confirmation of our warnings against expansion of this virtual strip search. Body scanners produce graphic images of travelers’ bodies and are an assault on their essential dignity. The safeguards announced by the TSA do not convince us that the technology is acceptable, and we question the supposed voluntary nature of these scanners. Ultimately, we question whether the security value of these scanners is proportional to the cost to flyers’ dignity and privacy, and whether they are the right priority for TSA.”

Better not ever plan on flying overseas MsSage- as they are using them worldwide now....

Too me I could care less....If someone gets their jollies off looking at my body scan- so be it.....

MsSage. Some of these guys won't even notice it happening.

They'll continue to say, well the last guy did it, as they watch bit by bit, their freedoms disappear.

This one's a tough call. You can't have complete freedom without sacrificing security, and you can't have complete security without sacrficing some freedom. All we can do is try and balance it out, but agreeing where that balance point should be is almost impossible.

I tend to see it as a swinging pendulum. After 9/11, we instituted invasive, inconvenient, and often silly procedures to make it safer to fly. People complained, but they went along with it because it made them feel safer. Now, 8 years later, we've had no more attacks (that's "man-made disasters" to you lefties out there) and people are beginning to think these procedures aren't necessary anymore. They want their freedom back. Fine. Give it to them, but you can dam well bet if and when a couple more planes are hijacked and flown into buildings, the next round of security measures will be even more draconian.

Most of us have heard the phrase "freedom isn't free". This being Memorial Day, I'm sure it's been said thousands of times today alone. While it's normally in reference to veterans who've fought for our freedoms, it can also apply to everyday civilian life. Unfortunately, in this day and age, the more such security measures are relaxed, the more people will die. It's a question of balance. Where should that balance be? I have no idea, but I sure don't want to live in a police state, no matter what administration is at the helm.

P.S. I just reread this and, while it wasn't intentional, noticed I threw in a little reference to the Moody Blues. Who else sees it?

Like Van said,

What protections does this new technology provide, that is not already being done.

What new tools of the trade are these terrorists obtaining within the US, that they have to protect from domestically?

I bet the ACLU will be the first to scream, when some transvestite gets "outed" at a checkpoint.

But I can't wait to see the naked celeb photos on the internet. Anything to make the lawyers a buck.

All sounds like a Haliburton no bid contract, if you ask me.

back to your normal response personal attack when you cant answer the question.
Does that make you feel like a real man attacking a woman or making snide comments to her? I bet your wife is SOOOOOOOOO Proud. How about your daughter is she proud of her dad making remarks like yours to a woman?

Personally I'd rather have the body scan than the inconvenience of a strip search- or cavity search- or even a pat down-- but also like the security of knowing the gal sitting behind me isn't packing a 25 auto stuck up her crotch....

Are they using strip searches and cavity searches for primary screening now? Didn't know that.

Wouldn't a 25 auto be picked up by the metal detectors, that are already bought and paid for.

Maybe they should use the money they are spending on these duplicate type security measures, on catching the bad guys.

Do you really think the next terrorist attack will be a repeat of the way it was performed in the past? All these duplicate measures will do is to chase the terrorists to their secondary type targets.

Bus/train stations etc. Maybe some additional taxpayer money could be spent there, instead of doubling up.
