Tune for today

Acapella - Fullness of God

We had the privilege of hearing these guys live some years ago and the only thing I could say is that their concert was not nearly long enough! No instruments - all the sound is produced vocally.

Some friends from Mississippi were visiting us at the time and we took them along to hear the group. Our southern friends were amazed by the composition of the quartet - 2 black and 2 white guys (at that time). "Maaaan", my buddy intoned in his southern drawl, "You'd neva see that baack home, a mixed group singing together..."

Phillips Craig & Dean - I Want To Be Just Like You

My boys are not little anymore, but this song still always kinda rips me up and makes me evaluate - what do I model to them...

When I hear this song I am usually transported back almost 30 years in time when my oldest son - then a little boy - was standing beside me, leaning against the kitchen cupboard.

He was doing his best to replicate my posture, arms folded on his chest, one foot hitched up behind himself against the cupboard door.

I looked down at him standing there, his eyes beaming up at me as he said, "See Dad, I'm just about like you!"

Whoa, what a statement, what a challenge!

So now when I observe his life and decisions, I realize that while he is completely responsible for his actions, I have nonetheless played a significant part in how he got to where he is. And that keeps me from becoming either too proud or too humbled...

To all dads - Lean on the grace of God and the power he gives to all who follow Him!
