I wondered if anyone would change thier turnout date because of this years weather?I turnout July 4 and I'm thinking of waiting a few more days.I bought cows that started in late March and took an 18% daeth loss on them.Havent lost any out of the ones bred for April but it can happen.

I have been thinking about it for the last few years, but this year it is going to happen. We normally start calving the Heifers the 1st of March with the cows starting about the 15th. Next year, I'm going to give the May 1 starting date a try. Calving shouldn't be as much work as it has been the last few years. My luck, next March will probably be one of the nicest ever for calving, but maybe not. We'll see how it works...........

smalltime, I've been to 3 brandings in the last 3 days in our neighborhood. I've never seen so many calves with frozen ears and tails. And those are the lucky ones.

I think your % of loss is shared by others in this area. Calves better be worth something this fall!

So far so good weatherwise on my calving. I turned the bulls out last July 21. First calf this spring arrived April 22. I have done this later calving for several years and intend to follow the same schedule again.

One thing for sure; we can't duck the weather and we don't know what
it will be, til it IS.

A friend at Ekalaka changed his calving date to April 15 and still got
hit with a bad storm. Now he does mid-May; but he still has problems because now he is calving on alfalfa.

It seems late April to May is a good time. Especailly if you can get
them calved out by June 1. Seems to me that if calves are born after
June 1, they never amount to much in the fall. I think their system
isn't ready for green grass that early and when their system can
handle it, the grass is no longer green. FWIW.

Hey, Justin, check your PMs.
