The last week of school Lil Lilly's history teacher was discussin TV Dinners with the class....why I have no idea....but that's what they were talkin about. She was the only one in the class that had never ate one. So he told her that if she'd get one, he'd give her extra credit. (jokingly) but she insisted that we buy her a TV dinner. We did....picture looked like hamburger steak with brown gravy, green beans, mashed potatoes......even chocolate cake for desert. LOL
Well....tonight she came in hungry...as usual  Even after eatin out, Mexican food, about 5pm.
So...while I"m in the shower...she comes in there and says, "Mama, we got us a dilema...this box says to put this in the oven at 350 and it's in PLASTIC!!!!  LOL I told her to go ahead n do what it said....but she just knew it was gonna be a melted glob when it got done (35 minutes)
Well it wasn't...but it might as well have been. She sat down to eat it...and made all kinda faces....and pushed stuff around a lil bit....tried everthang on the plate.....then declared it NASTY!!!!!!! She was sure glad that we don't eat TV Dinners.....LOL

lol... We used to eat those every once in a while.. Generally when mom and Dad were going out and we hadn't figured out how to use the oven and stove yet.. Didn't mind them too much back than to be honest but I had one a few years ago and just about gagged on the thing.. Certain things in the frozen isle aren't too bad but the complete emals for the most part... Well, better off eating bark off a tree.

Take a look at the ingredient list on those tv dinners.
Usually the longer the ingredient list the worse they are for
you, and the list on tv dinners is realllllllllllly lonnnnnnnnnnng.

What I thought was funny is...you hafta bake the thing for 35 minutes. (I know I know it coulda been microwaved...but I'm usin the stand by microwave and it's almost 20 years old..and makes hot/hard spots when you warm anything with it)
I told her...in 35 minutes I can put together Real food. LOL

Them meat patties in the thing didn't look like meat at all...it looked more like a pattie made with oatmeal, with a lil tiny piece of hamburger here and there.

Uhgggggg :gag:

There has been a rise of new business outside of Atlanta in all the suburbs.

In just about every strip mall there is a place where these "soccer moms" go at night and prepare all the family meals for the next week.

The business establishment furnishes all the ingredients, supervision, stoves, etc.

They prepare the meals and put them in microwaveable containers for heating later.

This way, mom only cooks once per week...........

I guess you might call these TV Dinners?

I couldn't handle it. I want a fresh pone of cornbread every night with my meal..........

My mother in law did this for my wife when my son was born (Strange, because I do most of the cooking anyways).. Wasn't any more convienant, wasn't very good tasting and we ended up pitching most of it.. By the time the stuff thawed out if it wasn't mushy it still would have been faster to just thaw out some burger or a roast or whatever... I dind a lot of these time saving devices to cost you more time than they save..

I don't see anything at all wrong with spendin time together in the kitchen cookin, and puttin a hot meal in front of your family. We have fun doin it. Nine times outta ten, Mr Lilly and I are cookin together, most times both kids are in the kitchen either doin stuff too, or just spendin time with us while we are cookin.

If alot more people made time to do this with their families....I think there'd be alot more happy people ( couples families)

we do have nights where we've been out late workin and we call it "fend for yourself night" but most times there's numerous leftovers in the fridge, and you get to pick whatever ya want to eat. It's still a homemade meal.

Lilly, I think this is one of the most significant sociological statements ever made on this site. To me, it shows the contrast between, and impact of, the fast-paced, frenetic modern lifestyle and the healthier family oriented setting that builds families.

Why do we try to cram so much "busy"ness into life that we cannot seem to be able to do as you descrbed above?

DITTO'S!! (even though our family doesn't practice it as much as we should.)

This thread reminds me of an evening spent at Bob Jordan's with Soapweed a number of years ago.

We had arrived with a couple mares to breed and it got late. He invited us to eat with him. We were hungry, but being bashful fellers we declined, saying we had eaten. Little did we know that his daughter had made him a freezer full of homemade "TV dinners" with roast beef, potatoes and a vegetable on a disposable plate, covered with plastic wrap.

He tossed one one in the microwave for himself and as that thing started to smell really good, Soapy & I were both overcome with regret that we had lied about not being hungry. We sat and watched him enjoy a nice homemade meal!

I couln't agree more! we both enjoy cooking and experimenting, and the family eats together at the table, and yes, actually TALK together. None of our children had a day off in their school careers, and the last time I was of sick was 16 years ago, eating properly and staying active go a long way to staying physically healthy, and eating together as a family as well as with guests, keeps your social well being in top gear as well.
