TV Internet Bull Sales

I want to share some TV and Interent purebred sales experiences this year.
First I have not been a very serious bidder at these. The last one on TV the pictures were right on what one could here over the phone however the operator at the sale said your bids will be a seven second delay. We all know how much rolling rafter bidding can be done in seven seconds. So one bid was all I did. I thought it was neat some of the rolling did not even stay with the normal bid breakdowns. I bid on three head in diferent spots in the sale. First rolling were 500 then to 1000 and 1500 bid.
Towards the end of the sale the rolling was in 750 dollar bids back to me.
When the ring operator found out I was not going to be rolled they wanted me off the phone right now. I am sure the bull sale owner had his bulls floored higher than the bids they were just rolling to get someone to bid to the floor for than pen of bulls.
Watching these at home it is so easy to see how they get biiders confused, wear them out till they buy something at the price they want.
The old tricks of auctions are so easy to see when one is not caught up in the emotion of being at the sale. I think those top sellers are bulls they want to keep and use themselves and ofcourse the funny money trading between breeders. You buy one for big money and my sale and I will buy one at yours next week, The bulls may never leave the place.
Its interesting that a string of bulls will be going out for about the same price then all of a sudden here one that doubles the price themn they go back to the same price for a while.
I think the old trick of give a sale book, sale order, ultrasound sheet fast dancing ringmen and speedy the auctioneer are readly seen over the TV and interent. Just to confuse the bidder.
I have came to the conclusion that all the hoopla is just to get the bottom end of the sale to sell much more than they are worth. Get the bidder confused and sell him something and make him feel happy till he write the check.
I keep reminding myself the auctioneer, sales managers and TV and interent servies are hired to get the most money for that sale that day and they do there job. The next sale they do it all over again,The problem deals with the owner what he wants out of his bulls and how many bulls he had in the bottom end his is trying to move out the door.
I have bought way to many individual cattle over the years at sales (my personal problem) however only a couple of ranches really do folow up on the cattle. Most just get the money and run.... and will not even speak to you next time they see you. But in the sale book and at the auction they are the most nicest breeders of all times. lol When they get that check in hand that sure changes there personality.
What are other experiences.

If I am buying at an auction I have a ceiling price in mind and am pretty disciplined to stop there. They can give the talk and hoopla all they want and even try a $25 raise I am hard to bump up. They respect your bid after that. Most of my bulls are home raised or private treaty if I can. Nothing funner than 2 ranchers humming and hawing and kicking the dirt trying to find the price. Sometimes writing the price each would like on a bit of paper and handing it to each other breaks the ice.

Auctions are a funny game. I have seen alot of emotions and egos take control at auctions in my life time. Like PER says discipline is the first thing to take to any auction. Checkbook is optional!

The key is like you said discipline. Then make them slow the sale down. Don't play their game and let the bidding run like a runaway freight train.

I have bought bulls over the phone through both superior and Northern livestock and never had any problems. Don't bid more than you want to pay and things will turn out okay on an auction. I never spent any big money but if you are you should attend the sale in person.

We bought 3 Mytty In Focus bulls last year from Mytty Angus and watched
the sale online and bid on the phone. We wanted 3, I was only able
to purchase 2. I called after the sale and talked with Kevin Mytty and
he had purchased one bull too many for a buyer in Nebraska. He said
we could have one of those bulls, so we spoke for one. He actually '
was the best bull...but he was the highest priced one too. But Kevin
made that right, since we had bought 2 others. They were all
nice bulls and we like them. Now, hopefully, the heifers will calve
easily out of them...we'll keep in touch with the man who purchased
them from us. First time we had ever bought online and it turned out
super, because we were working with a good seedstock person.

BTW, Mytty's sale is March 1 this year and they aren't selling online.
Our bulls kept their condition and have nice attitudes. FWIW

In Focus has a +22 Docility EPD-- and all the daughters and sons I've had anything to do with backed that up...Nice quiet cattle-- and while some of his numbers are a little higher than I like- he definitely is calving ease- and doesn't throw a lot of frame...

HayFeeder: I know exactly what you're talking about. I watched an auction Wednesday. As I look at the numbers, bulls sold for $4,750 over and over. When they got to the yearling heifers, it was $2,000 lot after lot. Made me wonder

OT, you will like those Magnitude calves and I think they will come easy.
We never had to pull any of them as I recall. They were really striking
calves and made beautiful heifers.

(sorry about hijacking the thread...carry on...)

I was pretty heavily involved with the first ever bull sale on satellite-they used to sell 500 bulls at the Sask. Livestock Center test station sale. I was a board member so helped out Mill Iron Livestock from Buffalo, Wyoming who were rtepping the sale for Superior. I bought bulls from for guys from all over the U'S-I'll never forget buying blonde a'quitane bulls for a guy from Michigan he kept giving me updates on how his corn planter fix was proceedinjg. It workeds treally well thought. It's frustrating when the guy on the phone has no budget not salot of time to herm and haw. I'd much rather get a maximum to spend and hang the phone up-most timeds I can buy under budget for them. The best orders are the 'just make sue they're worth the money

Not really....We only have one daughter that my son bought-- who because of her maternal side (mgs Tehama Lite) is a pretty moderate cow....But I have a couple of neighbors that used him heavily for a couple years AIing heifers- and kept some cows and bulls by him that I have worked with quite a bit in helping them- and I was impressed by them...Moderate framed- thick and deep- and really quiet....

We've been using some Mytty In Focus too. We like what we see so far. Using the bull of the month is alright as long as it is the right bull. 8) 8)

Let's look at it like this. There are many bargain hunters out there and many can hold the bottom up in a sale and the internet would be more friendly than keeping somone tied up on the line like NR says.
