We just had are fourteenth set of twins, I think if we hit 17 that will be a new record for us. Eleven full sets have lived. Three sets have had one live and one die.

How many sets have some of you gotten?

Have a good one

Absolutely none! And that's just fine by me!

Good to hear most of your sets are still that....sets. Good luck with the rest of calving season.

We used to have a neighbor who's cows all had twins and even the bulls did too! But he went away for awhile and when he came back, evidently the genetics of the cattle had changed as he never had near as many twins then. :???:

How many cows you got? We've had as many as 12 sets live twins out of 400 cows.

We use a lot of Limo bulls and have never had many sets of twins til this year. This year we ve had 5 sets of twins so far. I think semi-mental cattle are the ones that throw the most twins.

We had two sets last night, all up and sucking this morning. One set we weighed and they totalled 155 lbs. So far only 6 sets, only one of them dead, and all being mothered by their birth mother. First time I can remember that happening. I'd still rather just have one good strong 120 lb calf any day than a set of twins.

Between my neighbor and I we had 4 sets of twins yesterday - - - all up and well. I think I will have to supplement milk to one set for a while as their mother is a hiefer - - - twins right from the start and she cleaned them both like an old pro. I will keep her and another 5 year old with plenty of milk up by the house for a few days to make sure the calves get enough.

I love twins as with the good pasture and good mineral I rarely have problems with them

Amazing! We had a neighbor like that too!
But everyone else seemed to have trouble those few years when he was twinning...

Isn't that funny how that happens to some people. Lots around them have lots of dry cows show up too.

I have one group of 79 cows that has had 60 calf with 7 sets of twins this year. Royal Pain in the arse. The other 281 or so have yet to have a twin and almost all are calved out... Strange how it works.. Had a neighbor once have a problem with cows jumping his fence, climbing into his trailer and than tricking him into a ride to the sale barn...

Strange how the twin thing goes under same conditions. Last yr. we had 7(at least ) sets out of over 250 spring calvers and this yr. had only one set-both ok out of more cows under exact conditions. But that is ok with me-I will always take care of the xtra calf, but can be a pain, but nice to have an
xtra to graft.

I had a set a month ago on a first calf heifer have no place to graft the extra yet and she is raiseing both She has been getting grained for the last couple months so is in good shape. They are being run with the yearling heifers and 12 pairs of later calveing cows and heifers the twins have mastered the art of stealing so they will be fine. The heifer mom will locate both calves then feed them so I do know that at least one cow here can count to 2.

Remember a few years back, all of the major studs were selling semen off of "Twinners"? They were supposed to be bulls homozygous for twins. I could see it if the conditions were right for the right system, but for us calving in June/July on open ground, ZERO twins is fine by me.

My Dad once had a cow throw a set of twin heifers - purebred Angus here - and those twin heifers had twins every year of their lives. Mind you they were both dead by the age of 7 and 8. Milked like fools and ran themselves into the ground, but it'd be interesting if a person could go back in time, to figure out just how many pounds of calf they weaned in their short life span compared to cows having one calf every year for 14-15 years. Myself, I'll stick to the singles.

'ALL THE MAJOR STUDS'-I think not that was ABS's own little foray into the lunatic fringe. I actually went through the twinning research herd at MARC in Clay Center a few years back-I guess for guys who want to barn calve and treat their cows like sows they might work-I've only got one set that I know of so far-on one of my buckers no less-they'll have her eaten alive by fall-she ain't exactly the kind of cow to come bawl for grain every day lol. Simmentals seem to be the twinniest cattle around-we have some friends have 50 plus sets a year-some absolutely huge twins-100 pounds a piece-them cows ain't 1200 pounds either.

We have had 35 hit the ground so far in the past 2 weeks and we have had 3 pairs of twins. They have all come dead except for one and it was so tiny and dies very soon. The first pair was aborted at about 7 1/2 months. The next pair came dead but were big calves. She calved through the night and therefore on her own.

Need I say that I hate twins? We have Black Angus and Black Baldies bred Black Angus.
