U.S. may have killed al Qaeda target in Somalia, officials say

updated 11:25 a.m. EDT, Mon September 14, 2009

From Barbara Starr
CNN Pentagon Correspondent

(CNN) -- A U.S. Special Forces raid in Somalia on Monday may have killed a wanted al Qaeda terrorist, U.S. officials said.

Special Forces used a helicopter to fire on a car in southern Somalia, killing several people, including one the U.S. military believes was Saleh ali Saleh Nabhan, a senior al Qaeda operative. Nabhan has been tied to several attacks in East Africa, including the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, according to the sources.

He also was wanted by the FBI for questioning in connection with the 2002 suicide bombing of an Israeli-owned hotel and the unsuccessful attack on an Israeli charter jet in Mombasa, Kenya.

The officials who talked to CNN are familiar with the latest information on this incident but did not want to be identified because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

The helicopter flew from a U.S. Navy warship offshore, one of the sources said. The ship kept watch on the operation and was ready to rescue the U.S. troops if they got into trouble.

The official said the troops landed to take away the body believed to be that of Nabhan for positive identification.

The United States had intelligence that he was in the area, and was monitoring the situation for several days, the sources said.

President Obama signed off on the operation, a senior U.S. official told CNN's Ed Henry.

Farmers in the southeastern town of Barawe, Somalia, who said they witnessed the assault, said a number of helicopters attacked a car and its occupants and that at least two people died. They said some helicopters landed and that some of the injured or dead were pulled into at least one helicopter.

Farahan Ali Mohamoud, minister of disarmament for Somalia's transitional federal government, confirmed to CNN that there was an attack in Barawe.

So is this "Overseas Contingency Operation" expanding?

Nope- just going back to fighting the war against the terrorists- and not running off on "missions from God" nationbuilding.....

Change your terminolgy.

It's not a war against terrorism anymore.

As for the "war on terrorism," Mr. Brennan said the administration is not going to say that "because 'terrorism' is but a tactic — a means to an end, which in al Qaedas case is global domination by an Islamic caliphate."

So hypo, I presume you oppose killing terrorists?

You failed to even notice that the U.S. administration that you so loathe took two strong actions against terrorism in the last two days. Too busy trying to sow dissent by posting about subjects as if you were a patriot but not a thread of real patriotism.

I posted about both these counterterrorism actions earlier this evening but none of the staunch patriots except Sandy cared.

reader..the president has said there is no more war on terrorism...not that there are no more terrorist.

Yep-- should have been done 7 years ago-- rather than taking off on wild arse " Crusades" and "missions from God" fighting his own battles against Gog and Magog- and invading sovereign nations that were totally impotent from previous actions-- while leaving the terrorists to thrive off this nation building policy.... :(

It has made me apologize to all Canadians and other countries that didn't buy into the Bush War....Makes it much worse for those that joined us in the original NATO venture....

Incredibly, President George W. Bush told French President Jacques Chirac in early 2003 that Iraq must be invaded to thwart Gog and Magog, the Bible's satanic agents of the Apocalypse.

Honest. This isn't a joke. The president of the United States, in a top-secret phone call to a major European ally, asked for French troops to join American soldiers in attacking Iraq as a mission from God.

Now out of office, Chirac recounts that the American leader appealed to their "common faith" (Christianity) and told him:

"Gog and Magog are at work in the Middle East. ... The biblical prophecies are being fulfilled. ... This confrontation is willed by God, who wants to use this conflict to erase his people's enemies before a New Age begins."

-------------------
The French revelation jibes with other known aspects of Bush's renowned evangelical certitude. For example, a few months after his phone call to Chirac, Bush attended a 2003 summit in Egypt. The Palestinian foreign minister later said the American president told him he was "on a mission from God" to defeat Iraq. At that time, the White House called this claim "absurd."

Recently, GQ magazine revealed that former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld attached warlike Bible verses and Iraq battle photos to war reports he hand-delivered to Bush. One declared: "Put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground."

It's awkward to say openly, but now-departed President Bush is a religious crackpot, an ex-drunk of small intellect who "got saved." He never should have been entrusted with power to start wars.

Why apologize OT....you weren't involved....I doubt you've ever worn a military uniform in your life.....baracko has done enough apologizing to cover every citizen in the U.S. for the next 3 wars.
