No wonder the gov't is buying ammo by the billions. If they can't keep up with the guns................you know the ammo is being stolen & lost.
U.S. Park Police can't account for hundreds of weapons in its inventory, according to an inspector general investigation that began after an anonymous tip alleged the USPP had no procedure for cataloging its military-style rifles.
The 14-page report was released Thursday following visits by the inspector general to USPP storage facilities in Washington, D.C., New York, California and Georgia. The investigation showed USPP had 1,400 weapons, including handguns, rifles and shotguns, that weren't listed in inventories or were cataloged incorrectly.
"These included 477 military style automatic and semiautomatic rifles," the report noted, adding that other weapons were discovered that "fulfilled no operational need."
The USPP protects federal parks and has about 640 sworn officers.
The report also cites USPP for what is describes as "poor weapons accountability," including incidents where former employees kept their weapons with them when they transferred to other government agencies or when they retired.
"We found credible evidence of conditions that would allow for theft and misuse of firearms, and the ability to conceal the fact if weapons were missing," the IG report said.
