South Korea has agreed to open its market to U.S. beef imports. The announcement comes on the morning of a scheduled meeting between President Bush and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak at Camp David. The proposed U.S.-South Korea free trade agreement is on the agenda for that meeting. Members of Congress have made it clear they would not approve any deal with the Koreans until the beef issue is resolved.

Details of the agreement are to be released later today but the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea says the deal will allow imports of all cuts of beef from cattle of all ages.

At one time, South Korea was one of the largest U.S. beef customers but the borders were closed with the discovery of a BSE-positive cow in the U.S. in 2003. The borders were reopened on a limited scale in April of 2007 but shipments were halted again in October of 2007.

We'll see how well it sells.

Call me the eternal pessimist- but I have to wait and see before I believe it...Sounds to me like just another smokescreen to get Congress to sign the FTA....Still has a big enough loophole in it for them to stop buying beef to drive a Sherman tank thru...
I've kind of lost all faith and credibility with our USDA and this Administration- and need to see it first....
