So much for independence on Mid East oil.

U.S. urged to cancel plans for Alberta pipeline over climate fears

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is urging the Obama administration to put the brakes on a proposed pipeline linking Alberta's oilsands industry with American refineries because of its potential impact on global warming.

In a newly released letter to the U.S. State Department, EPA officials suggested that, if approved, the $12-billion Keystone XL project, proposed by TransCanada, would bring oil into the country with a much higher environmental footprint than the average crude oil now being refined.

Only problem I have with the pipeline is that it doesn't go to a refinery on the Canadian side of the border first. There aught to be a law about that...
Funny though how tarsands oil can be considered dirty compared to say... gulf oil?!?

Canceling that line would be the best thing ever for Canada. Build the refinery(ies) right here to replace oil imports and to export.

What would be wrong with that?

Silver, many would agree with you!

I wondered how it could be cheaper to build a 1200 hundred mile pipeline to Gulf Coast refineries than to build a refinery in Canada? I thought that would be something that Canada would want, too. I know the 2nd pipeline is still waiting for the Presidential permit to be issued.
