WASHINGTON -- Bowing to ferocious opposition in Congress, a Dubai-owned company signaled surrender Thursday in its quest to take over operations at U.S. ports.

"DP World will transfer fully the U.S. operations ... to a United States entity," the firm's top executive, H. Edward Bilkey, said in an announcement that capped weeks of controversy.

I've heard they are selling their interests to Haliburton! 8)

The Republican Congress handed their president his head on a platter this time. Amazing how an election year will put some backbone into Republican Senators and Congressmen/women. :)

Seems funny no one cares that California's largest port is controlled by the Peoples Republic of China. Let's think about that. The UAE is considered a critical ally of the US in it's 'war on terror', a large purchaser of Boing jet's (to the tune of billions), etc. And communist China fits in how??? :???:

Were any of the 9/11 highjackers from China? Did China recognize the Talaban as the legit government of Afghanastan? Does China recognize Israel's right to exist? Was money for the 9/11 highjackers routed through China? Did China offer aid and comfort to Osama Bin Laden?

While I think our ports should be operated by American businesses, to compare any other country currently operating a US port to the UAE is misleading. Americans aren't necessarily against Arabs or foreigners in general. But the UAE has a lot of amends to make before I'd trust them to run a hot dog stand.

Could you repeat that? In English this time?

Surely your not serious? :? :???: :? :???: :???: :? :???:

Yes, I am serious. Do you mean to say
"Backbone IN Democrats?"

That's what I meant by "in English." Sorry, I used to be an editor of a national livestock publication. Bad habit of mine correcting spelling and grammar mistakes.

It certainly is NOT misleading to compare any other country operating a US port. The UAE is your countries best ally in that area, and deserves thanks for the support it has given the US.
Asking rhetorical childish questions like you just did does nothing to make your point.

Russia is working with Iraq to supply them with nuclear matter they need for peaceful uses. That way they won't have to build the plants to enrich their own uranium and can also use it for military purposes. The Bush Administration supports Russia's plan.

I haven't heard China threaten to veto any sanctions. But if Iran is stopped from selling their oil on the open market, it can create a lot of problems for a lot of countries. I wouldn't be surprised to see some member of the Security Council veto sanctions.

Bush has but us in a terrible position on Iran. He's squandered much of the world's good will by invading Iraq. He's squandered much of our military might in the desert. He's squandered much of the good will in the region. Now he's left mostly with diplomacy to use with Iran and that's not his strong point...assuming you believe he has a strong point.

The Iranian Army is not like Saddam's Army. It's strength hasn't been drained by years of economic sanctions, or, as the US Army, three years of a guerilla war in a damaging environment.
