I heard Barr on the radio today - sounds to me like he's going to do it. That might be all it takes to give it to the Dems.

Bob Barr Weighing Presidential Run

Former Republican Georgia Rep. Bob Barr is considering a run for president on the Libertarian Party ticket.

Barr told FOX News on Tuesday that he should know in the next few days whether he is going to go for it.

If he does decide to make an announcement in the next few days, Barr said it “would not be in either Washington or Atlanta.“

Another source told FOX News that the announcement should happen this weekend, probably on April 5. That is the day Barr is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the Heartland Libertarian Conference in Kansas City, Mo.

Barr, who joined the Libertarian Party after leaving Congress in 2003, is looking to attract conservatives who are unhappy with the choice of John McCain as the expected Republican presidential nominee. McCain and Barr are at odds primarily over the role of U.S troops in Iraq, although both agree that tough interrogation methods should not be permitted.

FITNews, who was first to report the possible presidential bid, wrote that Barr will receive the endorsement of Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul, a GOP presidential candidate who is still technically in the race but has not suggested he would throw his support to McCain. McCain and Paul, who ran on the Libertarian Party presidential ticket in 1988, also are at odds primarily over the role of U.S. troops in Iraq.

Barr, who represented Georgia’s 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House from 1995-2003 and served as a House manager during impeachment proceedings against former President Bill Clinton, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution last week that he identifies closely with Paul’s outlook.

“Ron Paul tapped into a great deal of that dissatisfaction and that awareness. Unfortunately, working through the Republican party structure, it became impossible for him to really move forward with his movement. But we have to have ….a rallying point out there to harness that energy, that freedom in this election cycle,” he said.

I would sincerely doubt this......he's got some skeletons that he might not want dragged out.

On some issues I like him...on others I see him as a Bush Clone.

Ron Paul May Endorse Bob Barr for President

Former Congressman Bob Barr is set to announce his intent to secure the Libertarian Party's nomination for President and a news source claims Paul will endorse him.

A number of internet sources are reporting that former Congressman Bob Barr of Georgia will announce next week that he intends to win the Libertarian Party nomination for President. The incorrigibly pro-McCain organization, Fox News, references an anonymous source that claims the announcement will likely be made at the Heartland Libertarian Conference in Kansas on April 5th at which Barr is the scheduled keynote speaker.

Barr was a Republican Congressman from 1995-2003. He served as the House Manager during the Clinton Impeachment hearings. Barr left the Republican Party due to ideological differences. After resigning from Congress, Barr became a civil liberties consultant to the American Civil Liberties Union. He is presently a Libertarian Party National Committeeman.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Barr's Libertarian candidacy would "essentially be an extention of the Ron Paul campaign".

Barr said of Paul and the Revolution:

"Ron Paul tapped into a great deal of that dissatisfaction and that awareness. Unfortunately, working through the Republican party structure, it became impossible for him to really move forward with his movement. But we have to have a rallying point out there to harness that energy, that freedom in this election cycle".

The website Fitsnews.com reports that Congressman Ron Paul of Texas, currently running for President as a Republican, intends to give his endorsement to Bob Barr. While it would otherwise be an unusual action for an existing candidate to endorse another active candidate, Paul and Barr find agreement on a majority of constitutional issues. Paul, a former Libertarian Party nominee for President, has run an atypical Presidential campaign as a Republican so anything is possible.

Supporters of the Texas Congressman frequently ask, "Who is the next Ron Paul?" Bob Barr may be their answer.

I have a few questions of my own.

1. Will neo-conservatives like Rush Limbaugh (but pretend to be anti-Mcain, true blue "conservatives") back Barr? Limbaugh used to praise Barr up and down, especially when Barr was handling the impeachment of Bill Clinton. Or will Limbaugh and his "conservative" groupies prove, once and for all, that they will support McCain no matter what?

2. Just how badly will Bob Barr beat Mike Gravel, the former Democrat who is also seeking the Libertarian Party nomination?

3. Will Christine Smith write a press release about how she still fits in to the ever-growing mix of candidates?

4. How will Barr and Paul work together to forward the general cause of liberty? It sounds like Barr hopes to take over as the point-man in the Revolution for Paul.

5. Will John McCain realize he can't win the Presidency if Barr wins the Libertarian nomination? And if so, how soon do you think he'll send his 96 year old mother out to start making pithy, anti-Barr remarks on Fox News?

I don't understand OT - you sounded to me in the Universal Health Care discussion that you were pro Single Payer system - ie more government. I don't know a lot about Bob Barr but if Ron Paul is willing to endorse him, I am guessing he is NOT an advocate of any government health care plan.

I'd give up that and a lot more if we could just get someone in there that believes in and actually follows the Constitution, the division of powers laid out in that Constitution, and the laws of the land...
