Ukraine must stop ongoing abuses and war crimes by pro-Ukrainian volunteer forces

“The failure to stop abuses and possible war crimes by volunteer battalions risks significantly aggravating tensions in the east of the country and undermining the proclaimed intentions of the new Ukrainian authorities to strengthen and uphold the rule of law more broadly.”

The call came as Amnesty International published fresh research collected on the ground in the northern Luhansk region, Abuses and war crimes by the Aidar Volunteer Battalion in the north Luhansk region, documenting a growing range of abuses by the Aidar Volunteer battalion.

Aidar is one of more than thirty so-called volunteer battalions to have emerged in the wake of the conflict which have been loosely integrated into Ukrainian security structures as they seek to retake separatist held areas.

Amnesty International has documented a growing spate of abuses, including abductions, unlawful detention, ill-treatment, robbery, extortion, and possible executions committed by the Aidar battalion. Some of these amount to war crimes.

ya, what about her? She's the one that is suspected of killing some Russian Journalists, possibly spies, is she not?

I can see by your answer that you took the Russian story hook line and sinker..

you researched just far enough to find out what the Russians claim... and accepted that as the truth...

but the reality is she was captured, interrogated by the Pro-russian rebels and then turned over to the russians..

the russians have charged her with complicity ,.. a mortar round killed the two,.. and she is a helicopter pilot.. (source RT)

oh,.. and to top it off.. the russians say she fled to russia as a refuge..

Today another trial on Ukrainian pilot Nadia Savchenko has taken place. Savchenko is being kept in Russian on false reasons.

During the trial Savchenko spoke Ukrainian, she wore T-shirt with Ukrainian trident [National Ukrainian coat of arms]. She has informed that she is being kept in Russian since June 24 not June 30 as the investigators say. According to Savchenko’s lawyer Mark Feigin the investigation has no evidence against his client. Still the court made decision to detain Savchenko for 2 more months.

‘You have no justice, you do not have law. Your government is just… thatk God we don’t have Yanukovich anymore. I will believe you will not have Putin soon’, – said Savchenko.

She said that she was doing her duty, she was protecting Ukraine.

‘I do not recognize myself guilty, I didn’t kill the journalists. I do not understand what Russian investigation and court have to do with events in Ukraine. I am Ukrainian soldier and I was doing my job. How foreigners may decide in what way I should protect my country?’, – she said in the court.

Savchenko’s lawyer Feign is confident that investigation has no evidence of her involvement in the death of journalists Korneliuk and Voloshyn.

Still, despite the absence of evidence the court has taken decision to detain Sanvchenko for 2 more months. Moreover, she is to be sent to psychiatric examination to Moscow and lawyers will not be able to access her for a month]/b].

Lubkivskiy informed that last Thursday the terrorists had abducted Serhiy Zakharov – the brave artist from Donetsk, guilty only of drawing pictures of the terrorists.

‘We demand immediate and unconditional release of all hostages’ – UNESCO representative said. ‘This is the “new order” terrorists are trying to establish. This is the “preview” of the “multipolar world” Russia is preaching’.

‘At least 350 people remain hostage. I repeat – 350 people are held hostage by the Russian terrorists. And in some instances – by Russia directly’.

‘This is the reign of terror they are trying to impose on Ukraine’, – Lubkivskiy stated.

Nadya Savchenko, Oleh Sentsov, Hennadiy Afnasjev, Oleksandr Chirniy, Oleksandr Kolchenko and others were kidnapped and remain illegally detained in Russia.

They [kidnapped Ukrainian citizens] endure psychological pressure, court cases are fabricated, and actions of Ukrainian consuls in protecting rights of our citizens are obstructed.

yep, that's about what I read on Wikipedia.

Steve, during a war, you will read propaganda from both sides. I don't believe either side entirely

and it does not matter how much investigating you do...you will probably still; not be able to determine the complete truth.

But, in saying that, we do know that both sides are being accused by Amnesty of abuse and war crimes.

So, it would appear that there are no completely innocent parties.

There are groups from both sides that are acting the same as they did in the 30s and 40s and others that are not.

But, you seem to be taking sides, based on what was done during WWII and before. And, I am also assuming that you have Ukranian family that lived through some of those evil times.

I understand, but that is no reason to put on the blinders to what is happening in the present. That is how history repeats...

Back during the protests I brought up the fact that many of the protesters were Neo-Nazis and not the sort of people that the Ukraine should associate with. And if they were not able to control those peoples actions, they would be unfortunately be "tarred with the same brush"

It seems that I was correct, even though you accused me at that time of not knowing what I was talking about. The neo nazi battalions are considered representatives of Ukraine, the same as the rebels and their "volunteers" are considered representatives of Russia.

Now, you are defending those same evil doers...and accusing me of smearing all Ukranians.

You are wrong. I am still bringing to others attention the acts of those same people I warned against previously.

yep, that tactic is used in the US too, by law enforcement and government. right now on "ringhtwingernuts", or gun owners...something I have condemned many times, right here on this forum.

and it doesn't matter which side has done it, I will continue to condemn it, because it is wrong.

Are Igor Bezler's claims true, or is he lying about the war crimes about the Ukranian forces and shooting down MH17?

On the recording provided by Ukraine, is he the guy that was watching tv and saw the reports of an AN-26 transport plane being shot down on July 17 and reporting it as such?
