NEW YORK (CNN) -- Two undocumented workers from Mexico and one from Ecuador have reached court settlements in recent weeks for a total of $3.85 million in damages for New York construction-site accidents, an attorney for the men announced Wednesday.

"All three cases involve construction and terribly unsafe working conditions," the attorney, Brian O'Dwyer, said in a news conference. "We're here today to re-emphasize -- as we have in the past -- to the Latino community and all undocumented workers that they have the same rights once they're on the job as any New York citizen."

When did the word "Undocumented" replace word "Illegal?"

Personally I believe the undocumented or illegal workers should get this compensation and then the construction company should have to pay another 3.85 million as a fine for hiring illegal or undocumented workers.

As long as it is profitable for companies whose highest goal is profitability to hire illegal workers or do illegal things, they will do it.

It is plain old economics. The benefits outweigh the costs.

Oh, I'm all for fining companies that hire illegal aliens. Now, the illegal aliens that received the money from the law suit...yeah! Give it to 'em, less the cost of the ticket home for them and their families...escort them to the bus, put 'em on it, and ship 'em out.

That comes from the same people who call terrorism "Man-made disasters", who call out-of-control spending "stimulus", etc..

We would have no illegal aliens if businesses would not hire them to save money or get more compliant labor.

Then we would be forced to face the moral question of our neighbor to the south, their disparity of wealth that their economic system creates, and its affects on us.

It is obvious to me that the disparity of wealth in that country has little to do with people who do or do not want to work hard as most immigrants coming here have a high work ethic.

It is more about an economic system that provides for the few at the expense of the many. It is an economy that has not reached its full potential because the powerful few have too many controls on the opportunities of the many. This is what a large disparity of wealth and power brings.

I fear that we have copied that model more than question it to the detriment of our highest productive capacity. I am all for the incentives of greed that capitalism captures but the ability of all the real chance to capture it is as important as capitalism itself. When we have an aristocracy, their power tends to increase opportunities for themselves and limit other's opportunities. It is Mexico's problem that we have imported. The oligarchs like their own company.

Illegals are all that will work down here on certain "Manual Labor" jobs.

As for the locals, why work when you can sit at home and get a check?

My friends (Construction businesses) are in a pickle over this, it's either hire someone who may or may not be legal, or don't get the job done............

Meanwhile......the local "Democrats" are riding around with a set of 24" tires and selling crack or meth..........

If they can't get the people hired to do these jobs, perhaps they should pay more. Increase in price does wonders in a free market system as far as supply goes.

Right now where you live it seems the price for labor is under the price for Americans, but over that for illegal aliens.

It is simple economics, please don't make it into a racial issue. Not everyone thinks that blacks (or any other racial group) need to be paid as cheaply as many whites in the South think they should. Why aren't whites doing those jobs? Are they on welfare too? Racism should not determine the price of labor but supply and demand should. That supply should not include illegal aliens shipped in from a neighboring country where the disparity of wealth and opportunity is so great as to chase them out.

Pay more and you get more labor. Iraq contracting showed that to be the case.

Tell your friend to pay more or not quote the job if he can't do it himself or hire someone. He is paying too cheap for the labor market.

I agree we need to keep our social program benefits low enough so that working is actually better economically. We can't make working pay so little either.

The deadbeats wouldn't work for $1,000.00 bucks an hour, no matter what color they are.

Don't even try to debate me on this, because I know the situation here and you don't. You have no idea what you are talking about.

Bottom line is.......they can't get labor period unless they go to the Mexican, etc. workers. Especially the part-time work.

These are not big companies and must compete for construction jobs on a bid basis.

So what you are saying is that pick up workers who have no benefits and get paid minimally are not to be found unless they are illegal aliens.

Face it, Mike, it is YOU who can not get some people to work for you for $1,000.00 per hour. I bet I can get ALMOST ANY OF THE "DEADBEATS" you describe if I paid them $8,000.00 per day for ten days worth of work.

None of them believe you would even come close to doing that and they are right.

The little black boy at the gas station and his mother sure didn't believe your "good intentions" so why should others? Sometimes it isn't about what YOU think, but what the ones you want to do something think. You just might not be believable.

No. As usual you read something out of my writings that was not there.
I said the Mexican (Hispanic) workers are about the only ones that will do manual labor anymore. At any reasonable price. You don't know if they are illegal or not when you hire them because many have a fake social security card, or fake green card.

You might get them to show up for a job, but getting them to work is another story.

The boy didn't care. It was his mother that was racially biased. She must have been about as bright as you, too.

No, I think that mother probably had you figured out. They were probably tired of kissing people's butt who thought they were better than them.

I have seen LOTS of people of color ---all colors--- work. It is a matter of how much you pay and how consistently you pay it.

Your racial bias is just that.

There has been an amazing and subtle change here in Washington DC. One that Mike would not like perhaps. I was checking out at my doctor's office and looked at the Obama mousepad of one of the women who make appointments. I continued talking the the woman (black) who does the appointments for my doctor. My perception of interactions nowadays is that a chip has fallen from their collective shoulders and they don't assume that we expect them to kiss butt and they suddenly realize that we're both just people who can be expected to treat each other with respect.

This is a pretty great city that way anyway, at least in my little suburb/town it is in spite of the disparity of incomes, we all mix it up in our local schools and nowadays in our businesses as well.

I believe we'll reap the rewards of that in a decade or two with lower prison populations and crime. But first we still need to worry about teenage pregnancy, inner city education, etc.

I am not going to argue with you on these points, Reader, nor will I argue with Mike on the institutional lower class many blacks have become in the deep south that is so despised. It is there, it is real, and it is a real tough problem to deal with. My grandparents are from Louisiana and I have experienced it first hand throughout my life. I do hope that Obama gives many of these people a different attitude and I have actually felt the very thing you mentioned in your post in Mississippi recently. I hope the racial chip that has been there for so long, much of the time deservedly, will be lifted on both sides.

On the illegal alien problem, I wish we would solve it. I don't like that employers, especially in the meats industry, used them to lower prices paid to labor and basically got away with it. My small town had a large federal case on the very issue, D.C. put in a new federal prosecutor who basically threw the federal case and got the real beneficiaries off scott free.

We have had the best government money can buy and they have had their impact.
