WASHINGTON – A growing number of states suffered double-digit unemployment rates in January, and others are close behind, buttressing fears that the national jobless rate could hit 10 percent by year's end.

The rising joblessness reflects the pain that the housing, credit and financial crises — the worst since the 1930s — has caused workers and companies. The latest figures were issued Wednesday in the Labor Department's monthly report on state unemployment.

"There is hardly any escape from this recession," said Steven Cochrane, managing director of Moody's Economy.com. "With state unemployment rates rising so quickly, it reinforces the notion of a 10 percent national unemployment by the end of the year.

Man I am glad I live in the country. I can always find my food.

USDA TO AWARD $5 MILLION IN GRANTS TO INCREASE PARTICIPATION IN THE SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

WASHINGTON, March 11, 2009 - Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that USDA will award grants of up to $5 million to help make the Supplemental Food Assistance Program (SNAP) - formerly the known as the Food Stamp Program - more accessible.

"President Obama has made ensuring people have access to nutritious foods a top priority for his administration and these grants will be especially helpful to those hardest hit by hard economic times," said Vilsack.

The Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 authorized USDA to award $5 million in grants for state and local government and private non-profit organization projects aimed at simplifying the SNAP application and eligibility systems or improving access to SNAP benefits by eligible households. Today the Department announced the request for proposals with a deadline to submit grant applications of June 11, 2009.

This year, USDA plans to fund a partnership between a State agency and one or more private non-profit organizations to enable improvements in State agency intake practices coordinated with community access initiatives. The Department also intends to fund one or more projects designed to improve the retention of eligible households' participation in SNAP at the point of recertification.

SNAP, administered by USDA's Food and Nutrition Service, is the cornerstone of federal nutrition-assistance programs, serving more than 31 million people each month.

Grant applications for organizations can be obtained at www.grants.gov or on the Food and Nutrition Service website at www.fns.usda.gov/snap or by calling the grant officer, Lisa Johnson, at (703) 305-2848.

I'm on the Country Board of Directors for Maine Farm Bureau. Sunday night we had our annual legislative dinner. Maine has a reputation for some of the highest taxes in the country. We have lost a lot of jobs since the closing of mills and loss of textile industry. Young people move away from Maine at a unprecedented rate. I am one of the few who returned. I asked the group "What have you accomplished to improve the business environment in Maine to attract business' and give them an incentive to be located in Maine, thus creating jobs and revenue? The only answer (very defensively) was about Barber Foods, they were looking to move out of State. They employ over 500 people, many are migrant, not sure of citizenship considering Portland has a reputation as an amnesty city, but that's another issue. They told the owner about some bill they put through, the governor came down, long story short they are still here. They claim they don't recognized for these efforts. They are also bragging about the jobs created building roads from stimulus money. These jobs are re-hires of workers that got laid off last fall.

We don't need to give credit to politicians for KEEPING jobs, that is their minimum standard that they should be expected to accomplish. They need to go above that and create the jobs by giving businesses a reason to be here and not somewhere else.
