Brazil Beef Co Bertin To Renew US Exports After Suspension

SAO PAULO (Dow Jones)--Brazil-based private meat packer Bertin Group said Monday that its meat-packing facility in Lin, Sao Paulo, will restart exports to the U.S. cooked-meats market after a three-week suspension.

The U.S. government temporarily suspended imports of cooked meats like corned beef from Bertin's Lin plant because of packaging problems. Bertin's U.S. clients had complained of torn metal packages of shipments coming from Sao Paulo.

U.S. officials notified Brazil's Agriculture Ministry of the suspension removal Friday, Bertin said.

The suspension wasn't linked to beef quality or animal health. A U.S. inspection team visited Bertin's facilities in Sao Paulo in late August.

Bertin said it doesn't reveal its export volume figures.

The U.S. is Brazil's No. 1 importer of processed meat.

Brazil is the world's leading beef exporter,
shipping 239,000 metric tons of fresh and processed beef in August, compared with 248,000 tons in the same period last year, according to government figures.
