That is an outrage. More money squandered on caliphate building.
If I did not know better, I would think it was a story from "The Onion,"
the spoof-news site.
The US Congress has an opportunity to stop all of the nonsense cold.
It is pretty clear that they have no intention of doing so.
Under Speaker Boehner, his troops seem to be content with passing
acts and resos that are nothing but symbolic. If they really wanted to
solve the problems quickly, they could do it.
For example:
Yesterday's "defunding" of NPR will be killed in the senate. If it passed
in the senate, it would be vetoed by the current president.
The solution, which the GOP refuses to adopt, is to attach ALL of their
"wishlist items" to the next Continuing Resolution, the document that
calls for the continued squandering of money by the government.
The senate would stamp their feet and the current president would refuse
to play ball. The GOP could threaten to close down the government. The
GOP could holdout until the last minute, and the wishlist issues would be
fully exposed to the American taxpayers. (Remember, the problem is not
that Americans are stupid or disinterested; they are simply uninformed
about the truth of the squandering.)
The same play could be made with regard to the bill allowing the "debt
ceiling" to be raised. The GOP has a nice wishlist, but most Americans
are not aware of it. Tying that list to ALL spending bills would get the
word out fast.
That tying technique might even get some of the wishlist passed into
law.
I realize that the GOP congress is really just a "restraining order" against
the current president, but it would be nice if they would force some good
showdowns before 2012.
