USDA HURTS RANCHERS WITH GAMBLE ON BEEF

The US import this from Canada
2000 imported $24,136,000 worth of animal feed
2001 imported $25,618,000
2002 imported $26,450,000
2003 imported $16,348,000
2004 imported $14,756,000
So far this year imports are down but they still have imported $1,161,000 worth of misc. animal feed

for a five and a quarter year total of $108,469,000 dollars worth of misc animal feed.

These figures were taken from the USDA Foreign Agruiculture Service web site.

look to me as if there was a problem with our feed the US better watch out.

So, my next question would be, if R-calf is right, and we have not been following a feed ban for the required amount of time, does this not put the US in the same situation!

Hat, when you said "I guarantee you that is what makes up the bulk of the imports", did you mean that the bulk of the imported feeds Tam referenced is fed to cattle in the USA?

If so, wouldn't that mean we are equally likely to have BSE show up in a USA bred, born, and raised cow as Canada is? Maybe adding in the amount of feed imported from Europe adds to the danger.

Does anyone know specifically what the feed imported from Europe is? That seems a far distance to pay freight on feed. Are we that short of feed in this country that importing from Europe is necessary?

Is there any breakdown available on any of these feeds as to whether some is for pets, or animals other than cattle?

With your stand on the bse prob. why would you not think that any amount of feed imported from greatbritian be significant  You were the last person on this board that I thought would downplay feed imports from countries with bse!

the U.S. herd as she was only one of millions of cattle and tons of feed from Canada that had been imported into the U.S

Tam, do you have the numbers on exported amounts of feed to the US? Does it make sense to label Canadian Feed as unsafe and then expect your trading partners to import beef fed from this feed?

R-calf does more to question the safety of US beef everyday!

As a Canadian I am more concerned with the amount of feed brought into Canada from the US given the higher number of US mills not complying with feed regulations.

To MRJ and Reader the Second

What would make the different if it was chicken feed or pet food instead of cattle feed? In the U.S. it is still perfectly legal to feed chicken litter containing chicken feed spillage and salvaged pet food to your cattle.

These figures would include all grain......wheat,corn,barely,etc.

These figures only include those imported as feed. Not all grain in general. there is other list that cover the grain not imported for feed purposes. I will see if I can find the US exports to Canada for you. There doesn't seem to be a animal feed list of exports.
