Statement from Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack Regarding Allegations of Impropriety at Ames, Iowa Laboratories
Feb. 4, 2009

Upon receiving information provided by the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), the Office of Inspector General (OIG) began conducting an investigation into the alleged actions of employees at the Department's laboratories in Ames, Iowa, involving the use of veterinary credentials to purchase medications for human use so that other employees might be provided with low-cost prescription drugs.

This is a very serious situation that requires immediate and decisive action. Effective today, 19 employees who have been identified in the investigation as participating in the alleged improper conduct or having knowledge of such conduct are being placed on administrative leave until a complete review of the evidence provided by OIG is conducted. Due to privacy concerns, we cannot release the names of any employees involved and, since the investigation is ongoing, there are limits to the amount of information we can provide at this time. Additionally, it is possible that more employees will be identified.

Accountability is of the utmost importance in our laboratories, which are internationally renowned. In an effort to be fully transparent and reaffirm the trust of the American public our stakeholders and trading partners, we have commissioned two third-party reviews - one of the laboratory processes at the Ames facility and the other of the management processes. The laboratory review has been completed, and although we are still in the process of thoroughly evaluating the results, we are gratified to see that it affirmed the laboratory is generally functioning very well and successfully fulfilling its responsibilities. The management review, which we expect will provide insight regarding how USDA can prevent such situations from recurring, is ready to commence. Unless privacy or security concerns dictate otherwise, both reviews and any corrective actions taken as a result of them will be available to the public once they are complete. There is no evidence that
any test results or other official laboratory activities were compromised in any way by this alleged activity.

As I said upon arriving at USDA, I have made it a priority to support President Obama's charge to establish and adhere to rigorous ethical standards that meet the expectations of U.S. citizens and taxpayers. I am committed to this charge and with the support and hard work of all USDA employees, I am confident that we will uphold the American people's trust.

Doing things like this are great but they are no substitute for the real work he has to do in the USDA. They are supposed to regulate and they are incompetent at it on many levels. The industry they are supposed to regulate basically writes their rules.

Vilsack will have to do more than this to bring integrity back to the USDA and he has a lot of work to do!!!

This is comical-- if it had been Obama's people doing this- or you knew one of them was black- you'd be screaming up the wall

Whats wrong with this is its against Federal prescription drug law- and Fraud laws- and laws against using your government position for personal gain....SHHEEEEESHHE

But I suppose you think it was OK for Bush to get FDA to change the rules and threaten to jail grandmothers and the poor for going to Canada to buy identical cheaper prescription drugs-- in his undying quest to back his Corporate buddies... :???: Or for him jailing farmers in ND who tried to save bucks by buying their weed spray chemicals in Canada- identical product that the Bush FDA wouldn't approve in the US because it would cut into the profiteering of the Corporates.... :???:

These shenanigans by the ground floor workers at the USDA has NOTHING to do with policy.

I can bet you anything that they didn't get permission from higher ups to do this.

And THAT'S who runs the show. It does no good to go after the peons for such behavior and think it will change the workings of an agency.

Let's have some REAL CHANGE!!!!

Well you have to start somewhere-- and sometimes when you get the little guys in a nut crushing hold- it can work right up the totem pole....

But I agree- its going to be tough to change a whole era of corruption and Corporate bought out influence that has permeated the USDA- and I'm not convinced yet that Vilsack is the person to do that.. :(
Altho he can't do any worse than the ones we've had the past 8 years...

Before Bush threw it out the window-- we had a competent- and working- Whistle Blower program...But the Joann Waterfields of the past several years have proven that had gone down the drain unless GAO or OIG investigators directly pinpoint them- and then they have just bought the bullet- admitted incompetence- and refused to admit it was the administration policy of everyone taking an 8 year vacation from any regulation over oversight- which since has came out in the Congressional Hearings that never took place for years of Corporate arsekissing  :(

You do know that Joann Waterfield was appointed to GIPSA by Clinton and worked in gubment positions during the entire Clinton reign?

"ANY" regulation or oversight? Wow, you are a liar.

But going after these little guys at the USDA is a complete waste of time and resources. Why don't you try and change the subject again like every normal Liberal does when you have no point to be made?

You are totally right, Mike. These politicians selling out this industry are from both parties. They are using their political power to help out their friends in big biz who are paying them off. It is undermining our democracy and it is the roadmap to facscism.

Bush and the republicans in the oversight committees do still need to take the blame for not changing things and milking the same old cow.

But I am sure they were totally upfront and honest with the BSE testing, huh OldTimer?

From what has become apparent over the last couple years- there was no Dept/Agency of this past Administration that even knew what totally upfront and honest meant :( :(
