USDA moves on beef import rule

A long-expected U.S. Department of Agriculture proposal that would allow the importation of some beef products from animals older than 30 months and live animals from Canada is currently under review at the Office of Management & Budget (OMB).
It is an important step in the process to reopen the border to beef and older animals. The OMB review is part of the regulatory process required prior to USDA publication of the rule.
Depending on the OMB review, USDA's Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service could decide to modify its proposed rule. Typically, USDA does not comment on rules that are under review, but USDA press secretary Ed Loyd confirmed that the rule has been submitted.
According to www.reginfo.gov, the rule will have a public comment period ending in September.
