Utility Failure

hayguy said:
gcreek, what type and how many battery's do you use? thanx

We have 8 - 6 volt deep cycle batteries to form a 48 volt system they are wired to a 6000 watt inverter. We bought the system from a friend of Per's, I can pm you the address and phone number if you like.

The inverter components came assembled and attached to a piece of plywood. Even this electrical non-wizard could put it together......with some.... ok, a fair amount of instruction from my electrician son. :D

"City" power, sewer, & water, and natural gas are the perks I have from residing in town.

That being said, should the power go out, like it did last Thursday morning, we (me & my colleagues at the power plant) have at our disposal 4 Fairbanks Morse OP generators, and if all 4 are online at once, we are capable of generating well over 4,400 KW/hour, which is about 1,000 more KW/hour than our highest load has ever been (hottest day of the year). Last summer our hottest day registered 104 F, and the load was right at 3,400 KW during the hottest part of the day.

I've lived here most of my life, and the only time I can remember the power being out for more than 12 hours was during the flood of 1972, when the water was 5 feet deep inside the power plant. The city and the REA worked through the night and we got on the REA feed so we had power here in town...total down time was around 16 hours or so.

Kinda spoiled, I admit it.

We have a 5.5KW gen-set that runs the essentials in the house, including the water pump. A little more capacity would be a good thing. It connects to the pole which has a disconnect that stops feeding back into the lines.

It got a good workout in 2003 when North-eastern Canada and US went black for several days after almost the entire north-eastern electrical grid failed due to a maintenance issue in an Ohio utility company.   55,000,000 people out of power in August!

Which kinda highlights that we are far too dependent on our system for as vulnerable as it is to technically-caused breakdown or sabotage. Before that blackout took place, I had no idea that our power system was so integrated. Not a good thing. Not at all . . .
