Vaccine programs?

My yearlings have had three rounds of Bovishield Gold and three rounds of Pfizer 8-way before they leave here. That costs about $1.70 every trip through the chute, but it's pretty cheap insurance for cattle that will face uncertain challenges where they're going.

Sometimes I feel like it's a waste, but I sure don't want to send naive cattle with MY brand on them to somebody if they might cause a wreck in the feedlot. The best place to be SURE that they're straightened out is at home.

Are you talking three rounds since birth? I run my calves over as yearlings. They get vaccinated at branding, pre-weaning, and weaning. That's it and they're shipped at about a year and half old.

Yes, three rounds since birth on my home-raised calves. I do similar to you - a round at branding, and then I give the second round on the day that I wean instead of pre-weaning. I add a pasturella to the 8-way on that round on weaning day. Then I booster the Bovishield and 8-way again about 30 days later.

If I buy any to go with them in the fall when calves are cheap, they'll get three rounds before they leave here, too. But a mass-treat instead of a pasturella. Our big fall runs of calves in East Texas mostly have had no shots and still have horns and nuts. They're usually 'weaned' on the way to the sale and sell as singles. You don't really ever know anything about them - except that they're a bawling, walking, problem in the making - so you have to treat them all as if they've had nothing.
