A horse sneezes and someone in the "boarding house" will call the vet.
Fantastic money will be spent and it is almost a righteous ritual that people like to brag about how much money it cost for horses physiotherapy treatments to cure that strange gait problem that came on after that operation to fix the strained muscle.
Vets have been known to get rich on horses.
It is rare that a horse will ever make you money.
On the other hand - we see it all the time - folks call around for free advice - or ask complete strangers on a message board about the best or cheapest way to treat a cow that has been down for a week, foaming at the mouth, has a huge infected cut - because we do not want to pay the vet.
People will call a veterinarian down because they do not want to pay him mileage.
People will brag about how cheap their veterinarian is and then complain when veterinarians who specialized in cattle leave the business and go to work on Pookie and Fluffy.
People will brag about how they saved 10 bucks by calling in a witch doctor. Heck there is even a post above about how one veterinarian worked out of the back of his truck - lost his lease. Likely because he could NOT PAY IT.
Vets have been known to go broke working the cattle industry (and yes, there are multiple reasons for it)
Yup - all this for an animal that will make you money.
