CEO Discusses Industry Issues with Vilsack During Meeting

Washington, D.C. – R-CALF USA CEO Bill Bullard on Wednesday met with Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and a senior adviser to discuss the challenges that face independent U.S. cattle producers, as well as to discuss the various remedies available to improve the U.S. live cattle industry.

Bullard explained to Vilsack how the unprecedented concentration in the feedlot and packing sectors of the industry that has occurred over the past 20 years has harmed producers and resulted in a significant exodus from the industry of many producers. Bullard also explained how current trade policies, the ongoing relaxation of border restrictions and USDA’s ongoing efforts to implement a mandatory National Animal Identification System (NAIS) are disadvantaging the competitiveness of domestic cattle producers.

“While the cattle industry is in dire need of many reforms, it also is uniquely positioned to help revitalize the U.S. economy, without any government expenditures, provided that fundamental changes are made to fully restore competition in the marketplace,” Bullard said. “We wanted to demonstrate to the Secretary that we need his help to prevent the U.S. cattle industry from falling under corporate control by the multinational meatpackers, as has already occurred in the hog and poultry industries.”

Bullard also urged Vilsack to continue with his efforts to end the mislabeling of USA beef under the mandatory country-of-origin labeling law and to make certain it is implemented in the manner Congress intended.

“The Secretary was not only attentive throughout the meeting, but he also asked numerous questions and took numerous notes,”
Bullard concluded. In just his first few days in office, Secretary Vilsack has already given more consideration to the issues of importance to independent cattle producers than did any of the three Secretaries who preceded him.”

I hope he comes through with actual policies instead of being a bobble head to corporate ag like the last 3 more.

If you are a Republican, you have to explain to me why MCOOL is actually making traction in a Democrat's time in office and it didn't go anywhere under the Republicans. Republican Senator Thad Cochrane killed it by not funding it and no secretary of ag under republicans moved it into actually becoming a reality. Are the republicans finally getting the message that governing the country is more than just taking political bribes and that you actually have to earn your pay and work for the interest of the people?

That's funny. Seems I remember that on May 24, 2008 all the headlines were:

"COOL BECOMES REALITY"

COOL won't mean a thing if the republican wingnuts like Ag Sec. Schafer are allowed to write the rules.

There is a very good element in the republican party but they will have to take back leadership from the fascist back big biz who is paying them off part. Thad Cochrane from MS falls in that group that needs to be marginalized.

Some of the largest proponents of COOL have been republicans but not their leadership who have continually blocked it. I am only encouraging a change in leadership and change in philosophy for the party. The party has the right people to make those changes, but they are not in leadership. When "justice" is spelled "just us" you might get ahead in the short term but it will catch up with you as it has the republican party. I look forward to the day they turn back to their stated ideas and beliefs instead of selling the public out for special interests who just pay them money and favors. If you claim to be a conservative, you sure better act like one or the term becomes meaningless.

Shelby has been head of the Senate banking Committee for how long, Mike? He is saying some of the right things now but what about actually governing correctly when he had the authority? (From 2003 until 2007, he chaired the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs---and he was a democrat before changing over in 1994).

I think some of these committee chairmen are put there to milk the donation machinery for their clients instead of actually governing responsibly (this was the pay to play philosophy and the requirements the rep. party had on chairmen bringing in donations to the party).
