Labor unions pick Edwards this Labor Day
John Edwards has garnered three union endorsements so far during the 2008 presidential race

(CNN) – Democratic White House hopeful John Edwards, who has made a strong push for union support on the campaign trail, picked up two major endorsements Monday, making him the leading candidate for labor endorsements in the presidential field.

The United Steelworkers and the United Mine Workers of America announced their support of Edwards at a rally in downtown Pittsburgh this Labor Day. In a statement, Steelworkers president Leo Gerard said, "All of the Democratic candidates in the field share our values, and any one of them would be a major improvement over the current administration. But none of them is a more forceful advocate for those values than John Edwards. Senator Edwards is committed, as he has been throughout his life, to going to bat for everyday Americans and to changing a broken political system that leaves millions of Americans without a voice in their government."

The Steelworkers called Edwards the most electable Democrat in the general election.

In response, Edwards said in a statement, “These are the workers who built the middle class in America, and they are the backbone of the American labor movement. They understand how important it is to fight back when jobs, safety, standards and our values are at risk.”

Good. With labor union membership at an all time low of around 12percent, and his history of lawsuits that have done a great deal to make health care costs skyrocket, it would be a pleasure to kick his prissy little ass in the election.

I agree with them! I think Edwards is way more of a threat that Clinton or Obama. I do not see a black man nor a hateful woman getting elected.

I thought Edwards was more electable than Kerry was last time.

Hopefully the Dem's will make the mistake of last time and put up a Clinton/Obama ticket which will go down in history as the largest landslide victory by a Republican candidate!

How is "Cousin John" working out now? Reckon there are any more elections in his future?

Now that he might be going to prison for up to 30 years, he fits right in with the rest of the Democrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The John Edwards trial continues apace. More witnesses have testified about the millions solicited from Bunny Mellon for Edwards. Now there’s some word that the defense wants to call Edwards’ mistress and baby mama, Rieller Hunter. I’d think twice about that.

Prosecutors could have a field day with Hunter, an unsympathetic figure if there ever was one. Back in 2008-2009, I was in regular contact with Hunter’s close associate. These people did not care one iota that Elizabeth Edwards was sick and dying. Or that she was married. Here are just two emails I received:

Stand down, my friend. Now is not the time for ri to speak. There are some other things at play right now. But it will give EE some time to spread some more lies, making it all the more interesting when [Rielle] finally talks. Looking forward to watching her hang herself…

Rielle told me she [Elizabeth] was out speaking again. What the hell for? What is she speaking about and who the hell cares??

Did you ever follow up with those people she fired? I bet andrew young would talk off the record about what a freak job she is…

During my many conversations with Hunter’s friends, one thing stood out: she didn’t care about Elizabeth Edwards. The fact that she was dying was an inconvenience. Elizabeth Edwards, to her credit, defended herself by turning out a book called “Resilience” in her dying days. This only infuriated Hunter more. What’s loony and sad is, that no matter how old Bunny Mellon was, it shows what her character was that apparently she didn’t care what happened to Elizabeth Edwards either. I don’t care if you’re 20, 30, 90, or 100. That’s just cruel.

Crying openly in court, a former campaign spokeswoman for John Edwards delivered emotional testimony about the former presidential candidate's late wife, suggesting that she died with emotional wounds left by her cheating husband.

Jennifer Palmieri, who remained close friends with Elizabeth Edwards until her death from breast cancer in December 2010, said she cut off communications with John Edwards after he ignored multiple appeals to tell the truth about his affair with campaign videographer Rielle Hunter.

"I believe that John was continuing to lie, that he was trying to drag me into that," Palmieri said. "And I just didn't want to be a part of it."

Palmieri sobbed during cross-examination by the defense, as she recalled a conversation with Elizabeth Edwards in the final days of her life.

"She expressed to me concern that when she and John decided to separate, she was concerned that when she died, there would not be a man around that loved her," Palmieri said.

Palmieri said she promised to be there for Edwards, but her dying friend continued to hold on to her feeling of loss.

Edwards is accused of using campaign donors to pay for the cover-up of his affair with Hunter during his failed bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008. He has pleaded not guilty to six counts related to campaign-finance violations and faces up to 30 years in prison and $1.5 million in fines if convicted on all counts.

During Palmieri's testimony, Edwards buried his head in his hands. His daughter, Cate Upham, who who has attended most of the trial and was present during the morning's session, was not in the courtroom at the time.

Palmieri, who now works for President Obma as deputy communications director, was asked by defense lawyers about a 2007 confrontation at an Iowa Hotel in which Elizabeth Edwards questioned two wealthy supporters, Fred and Lisa Blue Baron, on why they had flown Hunter on private jets and taken her shopping.

"Her mindset to me was she didn't think that John was going to get the nomination and she just wanted to get out of the campaign… keep these details private and keep her family intact," Palmieri said.

The defense is trying to portray the botched cover-up of Edwards' affair as an attempt to protect his family, not his political aspirations.

The prosecution said it will wrap up its case Thursday. Hunter is not listed among the prosecution's final witnesses. Although the defense could call her to testify later in the trial.

Palmieri testified that Hunter was considered by Edwards' inner circle to be a "loose cannon," as she explained a confrontation between the former presidential candidate's wife and donors who financially supported his lover.

"Lisa (Baron) was saying that you've got to hold your friends close and your enemies closer," Palmieri recalled. "Rielle was a loose cannon and we just didn't know what she would say to the press."

Palmieri's testimony proved to be a mixed blessing for prosecutors when they asked her about their key witness, former campaign aide Andrew Young.

"He seemed insincere to me, might sort of exaggerate his experiences," she said.

Another witness, former speechwriter Wendy Button, testified that Edwards was aware of Fred Baron's financial and logistical support for his pregnant mistress while she was in hiding.

"He said that he had known all along that Baron was taking care of things," Button said.

However, she said Edwards did not acknowledge assistance from another donor, Rachel "Bunny" Mellon, until long after his 2008 presidential campaign.

"He only used the phrase he had 'just learned' about Bunny Mellon," Button said.

During cross-examination, Edwards' lawyers asked Button whether she had ever participated in any of the discussions concerning logistics of hiding her former boss's affair.

"I didn't have any role in any of these events that took place that led to this moment," she said.
Prosecutors plan to wrap up their witness testimony by Thursday. It remains unclear whether they plan to call Hunter to the stand.

"If the prosecution feels its case is made, she is a question mark for them and they probably would not want to call her," said Steven Friedland, a law professor at Elon University. "On the other hand, they know that she'll be called by the defense. And if (prosecutors) do not call her, the jury may think they're covering something up."

Case goes to the jury today.......................

From reading the evidence presented at the trial, he's a real slug..........

The Democrats must be real proud of him?

In closing arguments, Edwards' lawyer Abbe Lowell told the jury that the money to hide his mistress came from former campaign treasurer Fred Baron and elderly supporter Rachel "Bunny" Mellon. Both people gave him the money as a gift for his benefit, not as part of his political campaign.

And the money, Lowell argued, was used to hide the affair from Edwards' wife, Elizabeth, who was dying of cancer.

Couldn't have been, he has no morals.

Cuzzin' John
"I wanna make sure that everyone hears from me and from my voice that while I do not believe I did anything illegal, I did an awful, awful lot that was wrong," Edwards said after the verdict was announced. "And there is no one else responsible for my sins."
