Wacky markets

Can't believe how whacked out the cattle & hay markets are here. A recip cow I bought last year turned out to be open and I culled her. A year ago at her cost she was worth 300 small square bale of hay. When I sold her this week she was only worth 50. Hay is going for $9-10/bale & cows for 47 cents! Round bales of corn stocks are selling for $35 out of the field plus fertilizer replacement cost/acre.

I am only about 70 miles from you and I feel your pain!!! In a way this is forceing me to be a better manager as in the past I might have given an animal another chance but I'm holding a very hard line on my culling now.

Wow........what a loss!

Not sure what hay's going for around here, but need to find out, we're gonna need about half a barn full this year.

Picked up the report from the Wilcox, AZ Auction at the PO yesterday, and looks like prices are up from what they were this time last year. Al got $1/# for Blondie's bull calf last year, this year the 550# (like he was) are going for $1.03-$1.13/#. Heifers of the same weight are $1.04-$1.12/#. Pairs were going for $850-$1100, Bred Cows were selling at $550-$720.

I told Al what he needs to do, is go to the sale down there with his steer check (supposed to be getting that in the next couple of weeks) and buy a couple of bred cows for his herd. LOL He said he'd "think" about it.....probably means, NO WAY, MA!!!!!!!! Young whipper-snappers!

Another interesting thing I found on the sale sheet, is that my cousin is driving a truck for them, and now I have his phone number!!!!!!! tee hee hee :D
