Wanted.....Speed Reader

WASHINGTON -- Democrats in the House Energy and Commerce Committee have taken a novel precaution to head off Republican efforts to slow action this week on a sweeping climate bill. They are hiring a speed reader.Republicans on the committee have said they may force the reading of the entire 946-page bill -- as well as major amendments that measure several hundred pages -- all aloud. This is a procedure lawmakers have a right to invoke. Republicans are largely against the bill, which aims to cut emissions of so-called greenhouse gases by more than 80% over the next half-century but would be costly.

Republicans haven't tried the tactic, but Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D., Calif.) is prepared.

A committee spokeswoman said the speed reader -- a young man who was on door duty at the hearing as he awaited a call to the microphone -- was hired to help staffers. After years of practice, the panel's clerks can read at a good clip. But the speed reader is a lot faster, she said.

"Judging by the size of the amendments, I can read a page about every 34 seconds," said the newly hired staff assistant, who declined to give his name. Based on that estimate, it would take him about nine hours.

It took the committee more than two hours Tuesday to debate and vote on the first proposed amendment. By the time Capitol Hill interns finally left for tacos and happy-hour drinks at the local Mexican restaurant, the panel had approved just three amendments. Among them was a proposal to give government subsidies to people who trade in old cars or trucks for new, more efficient ones.

Mr. Waxman has said he still hopes to finish the bill by Thursday, meeting his goal of moving the climate bill out of committee by Memorial Day.

"He's dreaming. It ain't going to happen," said Texas Rep. Joe Barton, the panel's ranking Republican. He added that Republicans "have 400 amendments that we could offer, but there are at least 75-80 that we almost have to offer."

Have you noticed any bill that does not benefit or actually help the American people is rushed through Congress.... we pay our Congressional leaders almost $200,000 a year to represent the people.

This is what I've noticed: anything that furthers the agenda towards a global government, global currency (all global agendas) is rushed through congress.

Its been aggravating to watch CSPAN and see how they are allowed 5 minutes or less to speak on the banking problems and it was 30 years in the making.

I sincerely pray that we have some moral people running for Congress in 2010 and paper ballots so Diebold cannot vote.

If you've watched the days and days of hearings the House Energy and Commerce Committee have held on the energy/climate bill- just those broadcast on C-SPAN-- along with the number of hours debating and voting on amendments and additions you sure couldn't say they were speeding it thru....

Yesterday alone was hours of debating numerous amendments that went into the wee hours of the night......

Just like old Jimmy Carter said when he testified the other day-- much of this should have been passed 30+ years ago (some was, but later repealed by Ford)- and we wouldn't be in the place of energy dependence on nations that don't like us- that hold us economically hostage- and having to kiss dictators/Kings/Princes arses- or loosing young Americans in nationbuilding fighting Oil Wars....

But if you work for Halliburton/Enron- you'll kiss anyone... :(

How are we going to be energy independent when Democrats won't let us drill or build a refinery?

Report Shows Air Quality Improved During Bush Administration
A recent report from a Washington think tank shows that levels of numerous gases linked with air pollution, like carbon monoxide, have fallen off since 2001 and air quality in the U.S. has improved significantly over the last decade.

Among the findings: Carbon monoxide decreased by 39 percent, ozone by 6 percent, and sulfur dioxide by 32 percent.

"Pick any category you want and pollution levels are generally lower than they were seven years ago," said Steven Hayward, the policy analyst who authored the report, titled "Index of Leading Environmental Indicators," for the conservative think tank.

"(Environmental groups) said air pollution was out of control, but this was always more about politics than it was fact," Hayward said.

And how much did we pay for gas/oil/fuel/fertilizer last year under the Bush/Cheney energy policy :???:

What you need to do OT, is figure out whether the price you were paying, was the true cost of what you are requesting?

Don't be fooled, Oil will be back up where it was price wise. It's almost half way there already.

And as the USD continues to devalue, due to Obama policies, it will rise more. Commodities in general will, but yur purchasing power will be reduced by the inflation.

don't worry about OT, Obama is going to get him a free wind turbine and a free solar panel so he can get the old oldsmobile charged up.. and it will all be free so we can be independent of the saudis.. (until china repos Montana)

I'd rather pay $5+ a gallon for gas building our energy independence than to Chavez and the Bush butt kissing Princes of Arabia- and have our foreign policy set by them- or having our young soldiers dying for the Halliburton/Enrons of the world....

"I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents."
~Smedley Butler, Major General US Marine Corps and twice receiver of the Congressional Medal of Honor..

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes.

Oil is traded on an international market. Even if there was a method to determine which country you are going to buy your oil from, it would not affect the price paid.

China does not seem to have a problem buying vast quantities of oil, and they are not in any other countries fighting these Bush wars for Oil, or changing their foreign policies.

The only one they have changed lately is to buy less US bonds and stock up on commodities, while prices are lower.
