First, thanks to the mods for not just deleting the whole thread. I did not mean for it to come off like soliciting sales.

As requested I am modifying my post to remove anything that may sound like solicitation. Hopefully it is better received this time. :)

I am wanting to talk to some ranchers about the information that they record for their livestock.

I found a couple good posts with information in them but I would like to continue to find out more from the community here.

If you would be interested in helping out please post any information here, or at your request I would be glad to give you my personal contact information.

Here are some questions:

1) What type of livestock do you raise?

2) What types of records to you maintain for each head of your livestock?

3) What things would make your record keeping easier for you?

4) Do you keep repair records for all of your implements?

Thanks again to the mods for not deleting the topic, but rather just asking me to rephrase it.

( p.s. if you can give me some good reasons to tell my wife why she doesn't want bottle calves please send that as well. She doesn't want to listen to me on the subject )

I'm not the best record keeper but i do know I don't want bottle calves that need feeding twice a day. I do have other things to do and some times want to be away for a day.

Dear moderator who ever you are. Maybe your Macon I don't know .

I kinda hoped this thread would generate some discussion on what records to keep.

You had better go delete where i posted pics of my mixer wagon.

Please note that this is not a sales pitch or an ad of any sort.

It might not have been but it sure sounded a lot like it. Maybe you can leave all of your personal contact info out and rephrase your 'questions' in such a way that it won't sound so much like spam. Barring that, maybe you could contact some of our paid advertisers (the people who make these free forums possible) who are also in the software business and they could give you some pointers. I'll leave the part about the calves and maybe someone here can help you. Welcome to Ranchers.

hmmmm I can understand since its their first post but I have seen others that were indeed ads and nothing was said or removed.
Whats the difference?

I like the picks of the mixer wagon, BMR. Our theory on records is only to keep records that will be looked at again. Too much time is spent on records that just sit in a file or hard drive. My records now include pictures, GPS photo points and a page for each paddock. The cattle records are really simple. What breeding pen (which bulls) birth weight (small, medium and large) any comments and correlate mom to calf. Every thing else is an ear tag that says cull (for all imaginable reason) or her number. In the fall anything that carries a cull tag gets culled whether cow or calf. No need to refer to a book or ask why. I'm sure I missed some good points but am trying to get the discussion started.

Some times it is a pain to go try and find a little pocket book to find out why you shipped this certain cow.
I use the Ranch Manager and I can find out all info on any one of our cattle when ever I need it.
It also keeps me up to date on which cows are being culled and why.
I'm also not guessing on what days we vaccinated the calves and cows. Also what was used on the bulls.

To answer your questions.
1. Hereford beef and 1 Jersey milk cow.
2. Date of birth, sex, dam, sire, weight, weaning, shots, branding, shipping or keeping, illness and anything else i think needs to be recorded.
3.If the hubby remembers to write down the correct sex the first time.
On a serious note, a faster computor.
4. If you mean our tractors and trucks then yes.

Rephrased at the moderators request. Sorry to any who might have thought I was soliciting, I did not mean to offend anyone.

Hey buddy, no worries!!! I didn't take it that you were soliciting.

We (and the mods) have for some strange reason put up with porker pushing his stuff on here for years!!

So solicitation is nothing new on here anyway. Right mods??

For the cattle I keep records pretty much like ILuvHerfords does, and have it in a binder, on a self made form created off of an Excel spreadsheet. Keep it in the truck. Repair records go in a file for each individual implement/tractor. All the receipts go inot one central area and divided up into the major headings as per the IRS worksheets - fertilizer, seed, repairs etc. What would make it all easier? Inexpensive software that will work on a pda, and by touchscreen. Trying to record it onsite with cow crap, blood, snot, parasite control and everything else all over your hands, doesn't work very cleanly. Tapping on a screen with a stylus would be a lot easier.

1) We raise Gelbvieh/Angus cross beef cattle.

2) We use Cow Sense, been using it since 1993. Keeps track of everything

3) This is as easy as it gets. It's taking the time to sit down at the 'puter and entering your information in. We input all our bulls including AI sires, our calves at calving, our AI dates for cows, weaning weights etc etc.

4) We don't keep track of repairs, but keep track of costs by implement using QuickBooks.
