Even some of the staunchest of old conservatives see the idea that government should be out of peoples lives in the marriage issue... And remind us of the old Libertarian values that built the west- Live and let live... As long as you carry your load and don't infringe on me- so be it...

Coming to local TV: Al Simpson stars in same-sex marriage commercial
By LAURA HANCOCK Casper Star-Tribune

The television ad shows snow-dusted mountains with wind-swept pines, an American flag, downtown Cody, pickups and a statue of a rifle-toting man on horseback.

Then the camera focuses on a well-known Wyoming politician, former U.S. Sen. Alan Simpson.

“I’m a Republican, and the party’s basic core is government out of your life and the right to be left alone,” Simpson says to the camera. “Whether you’re gay or lesbian or straight, if you love someone and you want to marry them, marry them.”

The 30-second message is clear: Western values can align with same-sex marriage. The ad, paid for by Washington, D.C.-based Freedom to Marry, will play on local television in Wyoming, Colorado and Utah and national cable networks such as CNN, Fox News and MSNBC, said Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry.

On Thursday, the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals will hear a same-sex marriage case from Utah. A Salt Lake City judge ruled the state's gay marriage ban was unconstitutional. Wyoming and Colorado are also part of the 10th Circuit, and depending on how broadly the Denver-based appeals court rules, the two states could also be affected by the decision, Wolfson said.

Simpson and a handful of state Republican lawmakers recently joined with 16 other Western politicians to sign a friend-of-the-court brief in favor of gay marriage.

“We want to continue the momentum and underscore the continued bipartisan support, the strong values and freedom of dignity and respect that are making the case for the freedom to marry,” Wolfson said.

The gay marriage debate began in politically liberal or moderate states. It has now moved to conservative states like Wyoming. Polls show an increasing number of Westerners support same-sex marriage, Wolfson said.

“That’s because people have had the time to talk and think it through,” he said. “They know gay people in their community.”

The ad was shot last week, Wolfson said.

During the commercial, a black-and-white picture appears. It shows a young Simpson with his wife, Ann, who is wearing a dress and veil. In June, they’ll celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.

“I’ve had a wonderful married life,” Simpson said. “Why shouldn’t somebody else have the joy of marriage? Live and let live. It’s very simple.”

Jeran Artery, chairman of Wyoming Equality, which is leading a gay marriage campaign called Wyoming Unites for Marriage, said Simpson provides credibility to the ad locally and across the country.

“I think it can also send a message across the country: If Wyoming is ready for this, why wouldn’t the rest of the country be ready for this?” he said.

Simpson, during an interview from his Cody home, said Freedom to Marry asked him to do the advertisement. He agreed because he felt strongly about the issue.

“We’re all God’s children,” he said. “We’re all human beings.”

If they are going to stay out of it, then why not stay out of it? Reminds me of OT, wanting everyone else to stay out of bedrooms, while commenting on what everyone is doing in their bedrooms...

Why shove all this gay stuff in our face? That is what bothers me, if you want to be gay then do it in your own home. I don't march in straight parades, I don't advertise it nor did the president call me up supporting me for marrying the opposite sex. How many Hollywood people come out and say they are straight? If sports people pray they get ridiculed and if sports people say they are gay....look out it is in every paper, tv news and the president makes a big deal out of it. Dems are the one bringing everyone else in other bedrooms where I don't feel comfortable being. Do you OT?

But after thinking longer of it-- this PB site in no way represents the rural/rancher community I know or the rural America I want to be associated with- so instead of arguing with the racists, homophobes, and anarchists- I'll let them have their way with all hate, fear and the personal slander and libel they put out....

This is why you are not even close to being respected Oldtimer, you are thee worst name caller on this site and you don't seem to care. It has been pointed out to you so many times, one would think you would at least try rein in the stupidity but nope the name calling keeps coming, even after you claimed the name calling others were doing is why YOU LEFT PB. What a Complete HYPOCRITE.

Okay. I'll respond to this.

His "etc, etc, etc" includes what? Those of us who are scared of pedophiles being around children? What kind of phobe name does he use to describe that? How long before that becomes a politically correct dispostion that is supposed to be socially accepted? If two phedophiles are comfortable with one another and leave the rest of the world alone, I am okay with it. Just don't parade it down the street with the rest of the perverts and expect me to enjoy seeing it. Stay away from children.

Where does any democrat draw the line? They are so desperate for someone to back them, they draw no lines.

Name calling from someone else might have an impact. If OT calls me a bigot, like he called me a KKK member, I simply consider the source.

The truth does not hurt. Not one iota. Seeing my country fall is heart breaking.

Yes, let's throw ALL morals away. Why don't we let brother's & sister's marry each other? Father's & daughter's ? Grandpa's & grand daughters/grandson's?

I am getting a clearer image in my mind of OT's "watering hole".....

It's the Blue Oyster bar in the movie "Police Academy"!

WARNING: All Bigots

a person who strongly and unfairly dislikes other people, ideas,

a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices

a person who hates or refuses to accept the members of a particular group

a person who won't listen to anyone whose ideas or beliefs are different from his or her own

isn't it odd that liberals can't read or comprehend the words they use?

Liberalism is a MENTAL disease, not necessarily a strict learning disorder.
I have a brother who makes OT look like an extreme rightwinger, but my brother can read and comprehend words....what's left of his brain just cancels out any conservative thought whatsoever.
