Today's Wall Street Journal lists several technological developments in 2006 which are considered real winners including:

Mechanical skin stapler that places absorbable staples underneath the skin to minimize surgery scars

A new metal that is far lighter than solid aluminum and steel

Lighting system that creates no heat and uses only 20% of the energy of traditional lighting

Translucent photovoltiac solar panels that can be imbedded within a building's structure as a skylight or curtain wall

A transparent electrically conductive coating thaty can be used to make displays

Disposable labels that monitor temperatures of perishables during shipping process

Exhubra, a powdered inhalable insulin for treatment of diabetes

A form of diamond systhesized from natural gas making diamond a practical engineering material

This is just a sampling of what happened in the last year. Makes an old person wand to stay around just to see what will happen next.

(Joke - they are working on a sensor that will tell when a patients financial assets are depleted and that will automatically pull the plug!!)

we had a pharmaceutical rep at our hospital last week giving us an overview on the inhaled insulin......not meant to necessarily replace some forms of insulin, but as I see it....if it helps avoid one more poke for those folks then GO FOR IT!!! never know what the next decade will bring!!
