We Are Diminished

(AP) A federal court has ruled against a Texas law that would require voters to present photo IDs to election officials before being allowed to cast ballots in November.

A three-judge panel in Washington ruled Thursday that the law imposes "strict, unforgiving burdens on the poor" and noted that racial minorities in Texas are more likely to live in poverty.

The decision involves an increasingly contentious political issue: a push, largely by Republican-controlled legislatures and governor's offices, to impose strict identification requirements on voters.

The ruling comes in the same week that South Carolina's strict photo ID law is on trial in front of another three-judge panel in the same federal courthouse. A court ruling in the South Carolina case is expected in time for the November election.

"This is actually a national trend, where states are trying to do a better job of securing the integrity of the ballot boxes, and yet courts (are) pushing back against that, seemingly promoting and allowing illegal voters to participate in the election process,"

it is hard to find a reason not to have an ID,..

you need one to cash a check,.. open a bank account

drive a car,.. (legally)

buy alcohol, cigs,

ride a plane or bus..

and all those need documents..

you even need ID and documents to apply for welfare..

Papers You Will Need

Proof of your identity: drivers license, U.S. passport, immigration papers, Social Security card, and birth certificates for each person in your household seeking benefits;

Finger-Imaging
As part of your application, all adult members of your household must be finger-imaged.

Fact: You need proof of identity. A photo ID is one way to prove identity. You can’t be turned down for SNAP/Food Stamps benefits because you don’t have photo ID. You can use another ID like a work or school badge, a health benefits card, an ID from another social service, a pay stub, a birth certificate, or a voter registration card.

so they lowered the bar for food stamps ,.. but you still have to show some form of ID..

what about SS
Identity documents needed for a Social Security card

We can accept only certain documents as proof of identity. An acceptable document must be current (not expired) and show your name, identifying information (date of birth or age) and preferably a recent photograph. A birth certificate is not a form of identification. As proof of identity, Social Security must see one of the following primary evidence documents:

U.S. driver's license
U.S. State-issued non-driver identification card
U.S. passport

If you do not have one of the above specific documents or you cannot get a replacement for one of them within 10 days, we will ask to see another document, such as your:

Employee identification card/badge
Health insurance card or Medicaid card (not a Medicare card)
U.S. military identification
U.S. Government identification card
Certificate of Naturalization
Certificate of U.S. Citizenship
U.S. Indian Tribal card (Social Security has to approve as an acceptable ID)
Certified copy of a medical record
School identity card, certified record, or transcript (current year)
Life insurance policy

about everything needs documentation.. so why is a photo ID so difficult for the poor when they have to provide similar documents for SS, welfare and food stamps?

where is the burden?
