Weaning Time

We weaned our calves this past Tuesday. About 110 calves, and let the cows stay in the adjacent pen for the 1st 2 days; pretty loud, but at day 3, I locked the cows out a little further, with 2 pens separating them. Some of the cows still bawled, but the calves hushed right up. By yesterday morning everyone was good, so we trailed the cows back out to pasture, where our best corrals are, and preg-tested. With our commercials, purebreds and Rkaiser's purebreds, we ran 149 head through in about 1.5 hours. Had to replace some faded tags along the way, otherwise would have went quicker, but we had a good day.

Rkaiser and his Mrs. came to help, and she did a great job of picking up his slack.

All 5 of my little bargain Highland cows are in calf, just as I thought. They couldn't test them at the auction where I bought them, so it was good to hear the vet say they were all bred for about mid-April. A little early for me, but I doubt we'll see them born anyway. Ought to be fun catchin' the little live-wires.

Those Highland calves will be the cutest little teddy bears you ever saw. Just watch out for momma. Have horns, will use em.

Dad sold some Highland steers once for use as roping stock. I'd cross that off of your list of marketing outlets. Darn things just don't run like a Corriente. They only run good when they're mature and they're chasing you.

Getting kinda comfortable with that preachin Oldtimer. Might even come down for the Rcalf hoe down and do a little on the south side of the line.

As for work - well it's not like old purecountry had much to do either. Both of us spent most of our time up front while the real cow chasing was done by the neighbor.

Don't make me come down there before that Rcalf convention and tune your radio old boy, My dear wife is awfully lucky to have a kind soul like me to hang out with, and she doesn't need any alternate ideas from you. :p
