Weather Variety

Winds are howling 40 mph out of the NW and were that way all night- and the temp is only 28 degrees and feels like its blowing right out of Siberia - but no snow.....Ended up with .2 of an inch rain on the River and 1/2 an inch of rain at the north place...

Fed in around the windbreaks and protection- and hope any potential mommas find a place out of the wind...Only had two calves come during the rain- and one last night in the wind, but all did fine on their own..

The wind is a howling and blowing snow here. I-90 is closed from Rapid City to Wyoming. They're still predicting about a foot and a half of snow here on the plains with 30-40" in the Black Hills.

Here where I live we got about a 1/2 inch of rain :D Which is good any thing right now is a blessing :!: Thank god it didn't snow because the wind is howling :? I think our momma cows are think right today haven't droped any yet. Really hasn't been to cold its 47 out right now and tonight they say it might get 28-32. How is everyone up north getting along? Hopefully good.

It's OK here right now, but it's not supposed to last. Snow starting overnight, with up to 6 or 8 inches expected. We got over an inch of rain yesterday complete with thunder.

Weird weird weather

Well, this is definitely going to be one of those calf-killing blizzards in this area. White out conditions with 30-60 mph winds and they're still predicting up to 24" of snow for areas north of the Black Hills through Northwestern SD. It is supposed to let up some tomorrow, but not completely.

I only have about 20 calves on the ground so I put them all in the shed with the momma cows huddled behind the windbreak outside the door. I'm hoping for that "buffalo instinct" so I don't have any new calves for at least 24 hours, but we'll see.

Oh dear, sorry to hear it. I've got good friends who ranch by Colony. I'm not sure if they're calving heavy yet or not. Be careful, and don't take any risks :-).

My Dad is 83 and can't help as much as he wants to so he has plenty of time to watch the weather and worry. He is constantly calling me and giving me updates, like I don't have access to weather reports. He is constantly reminding me to be careful, great advice to everyone out there for the next month or two. Like he always says you need to be there to take care of the survivors. Life is too short to get careless and get hurt or worse. I'm starting to sound like my Dad now.

His Dad was hurt in a farm accident when he was a fairly young man and lived the rest of his life as a cripple mostly bedridden so that is why my Dad is so paranoid. Sooo, let's be careful out there.

Good advice for sure :D. Just think how fortunate we are to have access to weather forecasts. I never would've believed we'd go from 60 degree weather to this in less than 24 hours. Not only that, we can track the storm as it approaches online and manage accordingly. What a powerful tool .

Wind has slowed up here some and snowing less. Have gotten 5-6 inches of snow and a little rain before it started snowing this morning. Have had a few calves today but no problems..older calves are hopefully staying out of the wind.. they have plenty of cedar trees in the canyons to break the wind.

Very good point Swede, and as we know most of us are a few miles away from the hospital and help in general.Never any time to become complacent.

Yes, be careful out there. And folks, remember to pack those cell phones along. They might not work when you get in a bind or get stuck. But in most cases you can get to a place where they will work.

My neighbor called yesterday and was stuck in his pasture. We didn't try to pull the rig out. I took him home, we can rescue the outfit later.

It sure is not nice to be out there and get stuck this morning. Most roads still closed and no travel advised in town. This is an old fashioned 3 day SD blizzard. Blizzard warning in effect until 6PM here. 8-16 inches total of snow and up to 65 mph wind. Looks like I can go as soon as I move a 5' drift out of the yard gate.

It's just plain nasty out. The cows are so crusted over that most of them can't even see. Everything is okay as far as I can tell. The wind is supposed to slow down to around 25-30 mph sustained after a while here and new snow is supposed to be letting up so maybe I'll be able to see enough to bust a trail and set some bales out. If nothing else, they'll be able to rub their heads on them and see the world again :)

Cattle are amazing creatures to be able to survive this kind of stuff. The calves in the barn are crying and feeling sorry for themselves, but they don't realize how well they have it.

So glad to hear you made the night okay Richard. It only snowed about 5 inches here, but the wind is absolutely horrible. I haven't ventured out to the pairs yet, waiting for visibility to improve. Hopefully they stayed put overnight.

The sun's trying to come out :D, let's hope this storm is moving out of here.

The wind here is awful. It's moving the snow around and making conditions icky. There is a chance for more snow today and blizzard like conditions again with the new falling snow.

On another note my folks called last night and they had thunder and hail before the snow. Here we had thunder while it was snowing. I never recall that happening before.

Cute note on the weather yeasterday. Over at the school in our oldests class a little boy was scared of the thunder, and then he needed his coat because seeing the snow made him cold. The teacher said, to quit looking out the window and he wouldn't have to be cold. As loud as they were over the excitement of the thunder and snow I'm surprised they even noticed the thunder.

CRM, I WAS SCARED of the thunder yesterday! The hail was pea sized at most.

Seemed like the lightning/thunder was awful close and really came in loud on the cordless phone. Neighbor I was talking to at the time heard it and knew it wasn't on his end.

Visibility of the storm is worst yet here. Complete whiteout at times. No travel advised anywhere at the moment and the snow plows have been pulled off the roads until things let up.
