Well, they are gone.....

Today was weaning day. Tomorrow we will see how much the prices have rebounded (or not). 60 steers averaged 574 lbs, with 25 of them over 625 lbs. And that includes every steer we own with the exception of the 4-H steer. 31 heifers averaged 489, but we still have about 30 of the bigger end heifers at home, and 5 little ones.

Sure hope the prices are good tomorrow....

Good luck, prices here this week were up about 10cents. But that only means 10cents above jack$h!t, so it's still not great. There's alot of good heifers and young cows going for 3-500 right now, to say nothing for all the cheap heifer calves a guy could be gobbling up.

We were at a bred cow sale on Friday, and they ranged from $250 for the older ones to a top of $590 for two that weighed about 1700 pounds each. Looks like another year to buy bred cows instead of keeping heifers.

Now that I think of it, we've bought bred cows for the past two years, and in all the sales we've been at we've never seen even one bred heifer for sale. Not one! Any bred heifers around are not leaving home, or else they are not being kept.

Calf prices improved here too, with the heifers seeing the best improvement. Then again, it doesn't take much to be an improvement over what they were.  This is where the rule two will make a difference. The preg checking issues are not there to hold the feeder and slaughter heifers down. It's not going to do a thing to the cows because they still aren't going to go south anyway.
