West Nile Virus

For the last week I've been grumpy, achy, tired (slept 12 hours straight for the first time I can remember)...Swollen glands, little fever (chills), stiff neck and a headache today...Didn't have the energy to hardly move around the house...

My Doc thinks it is West Nile Disease-- could test, but takes several days to get results and costs a chunk- and she said with all the cases they've tested they've been coming back positive (2 neighbors have it)- so said it probably ain't worth the cost... Said that unless I get worse to just take tylenol and ibuprofin...

I figured as many times as I've been chewed on by moskitos while haying that I probably already had it and was immune by now...

Has anyone else on here had it?-- what did you do for treatment? How long did it take to get better?

Can't say I have had it or not but I find it odd how non chalant your doc is being about it to be honest.. Maybe it is just the tizzy that the state health department gets into about it but we hear nothing but the absolute horror stories when it comes to WNV.... We don't ever have to many skeeters out here as we don't have tons of standing water and the wind is generally a bit much for them but they have been a bit worse than usual this year.. Nothing llike growing up as a kid and those suckers hunting you while you slept though... God I hated that buzz when it was 78 out at 1am with no breeze and no AC in the house...

OT, we talked about this a few years back. Maybe you could go to the archives and find it. I remember one guy talking about his wife having it
and she was desperately sick. And I recall some talking about thinking they were over it, and having it come back on them again and again.

I'm so sorry you have that, hope it is something else that is easier to treat...keep us posted ok?

Really sorry you're down, OT. The Center for Disease Control says "There is no specific treatment for West Nile virus infection. In more severe cases, intensive supportive therapy is indicated, often involving hospitalization, intravenous fluids, airway management, respiratory support (ventilator), prevention of secondary infections (pneumonia, urinary tract, etc.), and good nursing care." Also that people over 50 are more likely to have a severe form. So we hope you take care and are able to get the rest you need OT. It sounds like you'll have time to learn patience for awhile.

I have often wondered that if us folks here in the South might carry some sort of ' tider' in regards to West Nile.

You hear of so few of us getting down with it and lordy knows we've been ' bout sucked dry with skeeters over our lifetimes.

I've asked the local MD, he thought there was a pretty good probability to the theory and the vet agreed also.

Just a thought.

I hear it's nasty and I believe a ' toddy for the body' might be in order OT!  In fact, maybe every 30 minutes or so?????

FH-- I took your suggestion and did a search--Heres the link I found...I also saw a news article that the state said 60% of the skeeters in Havre that they trapped were West Nile Carriers....Still not feeling too sharp today-- but also ain't getting much rest as the roofers showed up today to reshingle the house after the hail damage...

There is a wide range of severity with this. There have been a bunch of people diagnosed here after being tested at the blood donor clinics, who didn't even know they had it. On the other end, there have been two who died from it.

I guess as long as it doesn't get more severe, there's not much to do but keep in touch with the doctor and ride it out. If it gets worse instead of better, call the doctor right away. :!:

Tell Tam-- that just for her, I won't disappoint her...

This evening I went up to the neighbors areana and did a brand inspection for them...This is one of the neighbors that has the WNV-- we compared our aches, pains, and afflictions- then decided since we feel like we been on a 3 day drunk anyway- we should just go on a big party...But neither of us had the energy to make the first move...

Take care of yourself OT!

lazy ace's nearly 90 year old Grandpa had West Nile two years ago. He got through it, but was sure down for awhile. A young man north of us had it at the same time, and he was hospitalized for quite awhile.

Listen to your nurse at home...I bet she'll take great care of you!

Cheers---

Now the good news....... IF you have it once, you won't get it again........ So they say...........
