WH threatening to put Offutt Air Force Base on the BRAC list

Would this be considered extortion, or just playing politics with National Security?

While the Democrats appease Senator Lieberman, they still have to worry about other recalcitrant Democrats including Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson. Though Lieberman has been out front in the fight against the public option and the Medicare buy-in, Nelson was critical of both. Now that those provisions appear to have been stripped from the bill, Lieberman may get on board, but Nelson's demand that taxpayer money not be used to fund abortion has still not been met. According to a Senate aide, the White House is now threatening to put Nebraska's Offutt Air Force Base on the BRAC list if Nelson doesn't fall into line.

Offutt Air Force Base employs some 10,000 military and federal employees in Southeastern Nebraska. As our source put it, this is a "naked effort by Rahm Emanuel and the White House to extort Nelson's vote." They are "threatening to close a base vital to national security for what?" asked the Senate staffer.

Indeed, Offutt is the headquarters for US Strategic Command, the successor to Strategic Air Command, and not by accident. STRATCOM was located in the middle of the country for strategic reasons. Its closure would be a massive blow to the economy of the state of Nebraska, but it would also be another example of this administration playing politics with our national security.

He has the right to express his opinion but the bottom line is that it is all he has. Where is the phone con, the memo, the anonymous insider? In other words, where is the proof? Right now all I see are facts about how BRAC works and NO, NADA, ZILCH in the way of proof from him.

obviously you believe he pulled this story out of a hat.

It's not like this Administration has tried to intimidate others to their way of thinking, is it?

What does this reporter gain by making this story up?

What would the Administration gain if it was true?

sometimes a source can have a bias.. like the one who wrote the column you use as your source..
Jamison Foser has extensive experience in progressive research, communications, and strategy, having worked for nearly a decade in national politics. Most recently he served as Research Director at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). Foser is Managing Director at Media Matters for America.

Does the guy offer ANY concrete proof? Surely, he would have to have something that would back up his opinion? You fellows demand proof when a liberal states something that your side has done.

Johanns: Probe Offutt 'threat'

WASHINGTON - Sen. Mike Johanns, R-Neb., and 19 other GOP senators today called for a hearing into reports that the Obama administration used the future of Offutt Air Force Base as bargaining chip in the health care debate, according to a press release by Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev.

Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., has flatly denied that Offutt came up in connection with the health care bill or any other piece of legislation. The White House also has described those reports as "absurd."

The group of Republican senators called for a hearing in a letter to Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., and the committee's top Republican Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

"Various media reports have stated that the Obama Administration would put Offutt AFB in southeastern Nebraska on a future BRAC list because of a vote on healthcare reform," the senators wrote in the letter. "While we recognize the importance of Offutt AFB as the headquarters of U.S. Strategic Command and the approximately 10,000 individuals that work there, we feel that this installation should remain open or be closed on its own merits."

Nelson is a crucial vote in the health care debate. Conservative pundits such as columnist Michelle Malkin have cited anonymous Capitol Hill sources in writing that Nelson was threatened with closure of the base if he failed to support the pending health care legislation. Nelson says those reports are being spread by partisan sources eager to defeat the legislation.

Omaha.com - The Omaha World-Herald: Metro/Region - Johanns: Probe Offutt 'threat'

But we knew Nelson would say this anyway. As a lone holdout (for the most part) he's ripe for TLC and bribes. If he truly meant what he's already said countless times- that he absolutely won't vote "yes" as long as the abortion provision is still in the bill- then any action he takes other than voting against the bill shows he was bought off. There's no negotiating with principles. He can't very well out Obama/Rahm's threat to the media or he'll have made enemies with the same people he wants to be offered favors from under the table once it's established he won't cave to hardball tactics from the White House. He's trying to pull a Landrieu. This is his 15 minutes of political hotness.

Hypo, just for the sake of argument, the article (http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2009/12/17/politics/politicalhotsheet/entry5992331.shtml ) says "....Michael Goldfarb, citing an unnamed Senate Aid...". Was there really an Aid that said that or was Mr. Goldfarb just trying to stir up the pot? It sure would be nice if that Aid stepped forward

Gerald Walpin
Fox News
Crysler
Peter DeFazio, D-Oregon

“Don’t think we’re not keeping score, brother,” Obama told DeFazio during a closed-door meeting of the House Democratic Caucus, according to members afterward.

2008 campaign when radio stations and reporters were threatened by the Obama-thugs if they dared portray 'the one' in a negative light.

Obama not only aired a response ad to the spot linking him to William Ayers, but he sought to block stations the commercial by warning station managers and asking the Justice Department to intervene

“They wanted to intimidate WGN [the radio station involved] and force management to reverse its decision to put Kurtz on the air. They urged their supporters to send intimidating e-mails and make phone calls to WGN to complain. The station was deluged with calls and e-mails.”

“Another shocking case of intimidation occurred in St. Louis when a television station reported that prosecutors and law enforcement officials in Missouri had joined in an effort to act as ‘truth squads’ assigned to target the John McCain presidential campaign and any organization that ran radio and television ads critical of Obama.

Joe the Plumber asked then-candidate Mr. Obama a question, to which Mr. Obama replied that he thought it was a good idea to spread the wealth around. For simply asking a question, Joe became the target of harassment, investigation and smearing of all types.

On the morning of August 6th, Sam Stein reported at the Huffington Post that labor unions had released a comprehensive memo, detailing tactics to counter what were called “town hall protestors”. That same day, a White House official said to reporters, “If you get hit, we will punch back twice as hard.”

If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to [email protected]

Do you need more? This is the way Chicago politics operate, did you expect anything different?

67% of Nebraskans are against the health care bill... Nelson's office is flooded with ads and notes saying if he votes for this bill he will be voted out of office... And I think they will do that very thing...
