Despair over financial policy

PAUL KRUGMAN
NEW YORK TIMES

The Geithner plan has now been leaked in detail. It’s exactly the plan that was widely analyzed — and found wanting — a couple of weeks ago. The zombie ideas have won.

The Obama administration is now completely wedded to the idea that there’s nothing fundamentally wrong with the financial system — that what we’re facing is the equivalent of a run on an essentially sound bank. As Tim Duy put it, there are no bad assets, only misunderstood assets. And if we get investors to understand that toxic waste is really, truly worth much more than anyone is willing to pay for it, all our problems will be solved.

To this end the plan proposes to create funds in which private investors put in a small amount of their own money, and in return get large, non-recourse loans from the taxpayer, with which to buy bad — I mean misunderstood — assets. This is supposed to lead to fair prices because the funds will engage in competitive bidding.

But it’s immediately obvious, if you think about it, that these funds will have skewed incentives. In effect, Treasury will be creating — deliberately! — the functional equivalent of Texas S&Ls in the 1980s: financial operations with very little capital but lots of government-guaranteed liabilities. For the private investors, this is an open invitation to play heads I win, tails the taxpayers lose. So sure, these investors will be ready to pay high prices for toxic waste. After all, the stuff might be worth something; and if it isn’t, that’s someone else’s problem.

Or to put it another way, Treasury has decided that what we have is nothing but a confidence problem, which it proposes to cure by creating massive moral hazard.

This plan will produce big gains for banks that didn’t actually need any help; it will, however, do little to reassure the public about banks that are seriously undercapitalized. And I fear that when the plan fails, as it almost surely will, the administration will have shot its bolt: it won’t be able to come back to Congress for a plan that might actually work.

What an awful mess.

Thanks for all the info but if your waiting for libs to post back ...their not.
Since I will venture to say all on here are thinking adults who can get 4 brain cells to work together. You cant deny all that is going on any longer. I say keep the info coming but let the libs lick their wounds and show them yes we believe they are still Americans and welcome them back to help save our country.

but let the libs lick their wounds

No disrespect intended, but................

F___ the Libs. They have taken us to the edge of an abyss by simply being duped by the media and fell into their trap.

The idiots they have sent to Washington are screwing with my children's and granchildren's future. BIG TIME! Not to mention mine.

I don't care if they lick their wounds........as long as I can pour salt in them from time to time.

But Mike really some are pretty good shots......Do you want them beside you or spotting you?
No disrespect taken.....I understand and I felt the same but I am moving more to saving this country and we need all like minded. The posters on here for the most part really are "like minded" they got fooled and bought a story but that does not mean they cant see or I should say, they have seen their error. This is ABOUT our children and their future.

Being a parent you understand children make mistakes and we forgive them. Same here, posters make mistakes and for the future of the Great USA we forgive them and welcome them to the fight.

I guess I have missed where the Obama supporters on here have changed their views on him....in fact have they said anything about the happenings in the last week or so? other than Alice? is the first step to recovery admitting you have a problem? I haven't seen that yet, but perhaps I'm wrong :???:

Yes it is HARD to forgive. But your a bigger person than one who can not or will not.

Yanuck no they have not come out and said but look at the lack of reply to any thread. Ok maybe they gave up or maybe its me hoping they came around.
Yes in a adiction you have to admit but in politics you welcome them back in the fold and they will admit they were wrong.

Maybe its me and I have yet to draw the line in the sand to exclude some who I know/ hope are not lost. I have heard you should not throw pearls in front of pigs and I have yet to come to the conclusion that some posters on here are pigs.....yall KNOW what I am saying so dont even go there.

What is particularly puzzling to me is when a Moonbat uses and/or has used Bush as an excuse to vote for the current administration.
That is an unacceptably illogical stance in that everyone knows well the old saying about the "Fryin' Pan & the Fire".

We are all burning together now from their actions.....

The "Great Society" started the move towards socialism but this "Hopey-Changey" bunch races towards it.......................

Dont you think they know that?
What can be done now? We have to move forward and work TOGETHER to save our Country.
I KNOW some supporters are hopeless but I can not give up on the posters here just yet.

When I finally admitted that I was an alcohlolic and took the first step towards recovery, that step was the hardest of all.

Admitting to something that you felt strongly about that is wrong is difficult but not impossible.

Alice (bless her heart) took a half step towards her recovery

The rest will eventually see the error of their ways, they may never admit it but the will, if they have not already!

In order for you to take that first step you had people behind you supporting and encouraging you. Thats all I am offering the support and belief they can see the error of their ways and welcome them back into the family. Yes admit it we are all family.
Good job in overcoming your addition

MsSage, we can consider ourselves "Sponsors"! I think the first step is to admit that you respect the Constitution.

Study the words and meaning of the Constitution, and from there work on your addiction to the "left"

We need to get back to basics. The Liberals want to make everything so complicated, with laws, taxes, and "political correctness"

Get back to the basics that made the US and North America a great place to live.

Or we can continue to listen to the insults by a small group of posters, that don't like our "Gloating"

Yeah I agree hypocrite, let's get back to basics. None of those furriners, weird unChristian religions, funny head coverings, unusual life styles, etc.

What would Jefferson have thought of you all?

What would Jefferson have thought of a foreign socialist as President?

I didn't mention anything of the sort. I'm talking about personal responsibility, and the Freedom to make decisions, as mature adults.

Freedoms that do not impose your own values on others.

Do you respect the Constitution, Reader?

I wouldn't think even you would support the forced coverings?

while few here would have to deal with the heat of the desert, I doubt many would wear a restrictive garment such as a burka willingly..
