What do you get a 12 year old boy for his birthday?

Our grandson is turning 12 next weekend. This kid has too much stuff already (a sign of the times) but I need to figure out something to get him.
He talked about a remote controlled boat, but said that might be too much money. $100!!!!! I said we probably wouldn't get him that... :?

So, do any of you have any cool ideas? I'm not around boys that much and I haven't any idea. He has guns, doesn't need any more guns..of course there is always clothes, but they aren't very exciting to a kid.
We don't want to get him X-boxes and stuff like that either. He has them for one thing.

Looking foreward to some good ideas. And thanks!

How bout a Campin trip, with grandma n grandpa? Don't hafta be anything far away, just say a short one, go saturday n come back sunday, anyplaces to go fishin near you? Or even target practicin with the guns he already has. Time spent with him will mean so much more in the long run than a toy. He'll remember it forever.

I'd go along with that. Bring the remote controlled boat with you. and go to the lake or creek.

Give him $50 for the boat and let him work or save to get the other half. Then it will mean more to him if he has to put some in to get it.

Well, when I was 12 I know what I wanted. But you can bet Gramma wasn't going to get it for me!

Seriously, get him somethin' he'll remember you by. I like good old books. find out what kind of music he likes and get him some or a gift card to a store where he can get what he wants. How about a nice heifer calf? :D

First thing I thought of was a gift certificate to the local sporting goods store or like before mentioned, Cabelas. Good luck! :)

actually, I was thinking that this is a good question as I have a nephew who will be turning soon....he is very much the cowboy, but has every piece of tack he could possibly use!! How about tickets to a rodeo nearby?? I went on pbr.com too see what they had and I was pretty amazed!! However, at that age, a day BY MYSELF with granma and grandpa would have been the cat's meow!!! :D :D :D

I just finished a week with my nephew who is 12.. What he really needed was a shower but besides that all Ican see is a kid wanting things for someone who was 6 years older than he is.. I didn't understand kids when I was one and I sure don't understand city kids now that I live in the country... Sorry, not helpful I know but I would probably go with the Cabelas gift certificate or as Katrina said, some time with Grandma and Grandpa.. The older I get and the more I finally get to know my franparents (Who are in their 90's now) the more I wish I had gotten to know them better when they were younger and more "there".. Sorry, just got me thinking about grandpa..

Thanks for the suggestions. We intend to take him camping, but have to wait for this fire season to be over. This weekend, the weekend of his birthday, is our County Fair. We are going to take him to the Josh Turner concert with us...and he does want to go. So that is one thing we can do.
He and Grampa spend a lot of time together when he is here. They share a lot of time. As for me, I'm just the one that does the cooking, and the washing and make him take a shower...

I am a little late to the "game" with this post, but Lazy Ace and I visited about your question last night, and these are my thoughts. I don't know if he likes cattle, but if he does, here is an idea.

How about giving him a heifer from your herd? Then, you could make arrangements with him about calves...he could get all, he could get steers, you get heifers or vice versa. Lazy Ace's grandparents did this for both he and his siblings, and now after many years, Lazy Ace and his brother on the ranch with us actually have quite a few cows built up. My folks did this for me, and between those calves and a small flock of ewes started with two they gave me, I got through college debt free!!!! Most of my friends did not, and here ten years later are still paying off their loans.

No matter the arrangement of the "calves" owners, i.e., he gets steers, you and Grandpa get heifers, he get all calves, etc. I'd let him know the costs associated with keeping his "cow" and "calf." As well, I'd give him some money off the calf each year, but keep the "big chunk" and put it into a saving account for his post high school education. So, if for example his calf brings $600, I'd give him $50 or $60 and put the rest in savings. If this happens for ten years, that would be $5000 in his account (without interest) in ten years.

Camping and Josh Turner sound pretty dang good too. When I was a kid that would have tickled me pink too.

These are my thoughts...

Cheers---

Our kids tend to get money quite often as gifts they in turn have to put 1/2 in the bank and can buy something with the other 1/2.Our 17 year old daughter just bought her own laptop computer out of her savings. She can save money quite well,we have a 16 year old boy that likes to take his money to his dad's and just pisses it away on pop, candy and video games.Anymore he gets money my wife takes his checks to the bank for him.My youngest son has some money in the bank and want's to buy some pigs with it I figure he can feed them I will furnish the feed He'll make some money.

If he's into hunting Cabellas makes some leafy wear camo that's bugproof-it's the cheapest they sell-Ty bought a set of it and he loves it-I think it's like $59.
