What Do You Think?

Of a cattle show where the bulls are shown loose in groups of five in a big arena and judged off of horseback. Might give a better idea of soundness and temperament that the drag them by a halter deals. It wouldn't take a couple ranchers long to sort through them five or ten at a time. Might even get to see the odd bull fight lol. The cattle would be placed by group instead of individually-no clipping allowed.

Now that would be a bull show I would enjoy. Yup, that would be a good way to show off bulls, in this part of the world, tho' there might be some who wouldn't like it. I'd be more apt to buy a bull from that than led thru' in halters.

That was my thoughts exactly-with more guys calving late and such there might be quite a few bulls show up for an early fall show-most anybody can raise one good halter puller -bigger groups are a bit tougher deal.

That would be an interesting show concept. It would sure be interesting to see how many bulls have actually seen a horse before. We find that most PB breeders don't handle their bulls horseback so the bulls stand there and question what you are or offer challenge rather than moving off like they should.

Why would five bulls from the same ranch never have seen each other? I was thinking of a rodeo arena so there's room to see how they move out etc. I figure if you can handle rodeo bulls you should be able to trail five or ten semidomesticated pb bulls around in it.

Why we've hundreds of bulls that have never seen each other is why I said that.

I was thinking an area like you'd have at a sale...and regulation ( for lack of better word) size sale ring.

Yeah if you had something the size of what you speak....yeah it would work.

NR - then NILE show in Billings used to put on a pen show (pen of 3) that was judged by horse back in a big outdoor arena. It was the only part of the NILE show we ever used to bring cattle for. At the time they wanted the cattle to be in their "range clothes" but some of the bigger money outfits started fitting their critters and that is what put an end to the show. All the commercial cattlemen quite bringing cattle because of the few that brought their cattle all dolled up. It was a neat show though in the beginning - wish they would bring it back.

Well I guess whoever runs it could enforce the rules as to fitting. I was thinking of holding something like that up here-maybe even get a little jackpot going-I know a few guys with a good eye for cattle that could judge it and not fall off their horse lol. Kolunraven just how big an outfit do you run anyways lol.

It sounds like fun!!!!

Wish they would put the kiedas to the amount of "froofiing" at our county fair.....you can't put anything but water on the other animals, but for the steers, there's no limit!!! Kinda gives unfair advantage to those families who have the bucks to hire some professional to do their kid's show steers.....and sometimes the kids who don't put in a lot of time with the fluff, have better steers, but guess who always wins biggest?

That would be the fault of the judges and one of the reason's our children never got involved in 4H. It's kind of sad what we teach our kids at times. :(

Iknow, JB.

We were talking about that just the other day, how the kids up in the north end of the county are sooooooooo competitive.......and someone (my SIL, I think) said it's just because their parents are sooooooooooo much more competitive. And it's true. They seem to really push their kids, for the most part. Granted, there are some more "normal" folks up there, who just want their kids to have a good time, and everything.

One of the most competitive people I can think of right off hand, though, is the gal who's Superintendent of the whole Beef part of the fair......

Sometimes I wonder if parents aren't making up for their shortcomings, by pushing their kids to excell? Just a thought.........

Back to NR's idea of a show... Have any of you gone to what used to be the Bull Spectacular that originally was in Lethbridge in late october. I guess they have it Taber now. We had the AHA president come down to one of our meetings to learn more about it. We are going to try and put one on in the Fall of 2008 maybe in Lewistown at the Montana Winter Fair. I was invited to particpate in the very first Bull spectacular in Lethbridge and I just went as a spectator but I thought that event was awesome. It really got cattlemen from all over to attend.
