What is the Best Investment?? (Buying cows)

Given the scenario you have 1700.00 to spend, a Reg. Angus bull for sale via PT, and a heifer for sale for 750, what would you do?

I'm already buying a heifer, but was wondering if I should get a loan, and buy a few bred cows. Should I sell the bull now or wait till spring??

What is the best investment? More stock or sitting on what you already have?

the bull don't do ya much good with out the cows.........

bred cows have a faster turnaround and then invest in heifers.

With the price of commercial bred cows being mostly around $600- $800, you could get yourself a couple of nice cows.

I guess I should mention that you already had 10 or so head, and those were the two calves you were selling.

What's a CD?

I'm looking in the producer now, and I only see three ads for commercial cows (breds) that are under 1200. Shelly-do you know of anyone near s'toon that has breds for sale?

We're not talking about character. You were talking about making money!

Nothing wrong with having a nice wad of money in the bank/invested working for you.

Now is the time for you to start investing and saving money for college and for the rest of your life. Easier to start now than wait....believe me!

I know, I know, but I was just thinkin:
Basic cow price: 800
Upkeep/yr.:250
finished calf:1200
input costs for finishing calf:350

Over a period of 5 years,
800
1250
_______
2050

5 Calves, finished,

1200
x 5
________
6000
-1750
________
4250

Total Profit $4250.00

In the bank:

1700 (inital balance)
3%

1700
x0.03
_________
yuo gain $51/yr at this much.

so,
51
x5
________
$255

What do the numbers say? Cattle or keep it stashed? lol.

You can't stand around and watch a CD. Plus, watching it grow--unless it's a really big one--ain't as much fun as watching a calf kick up her heels and run, turn from a sassy heifer into a worried mama, and so on.

CD's are a poor investment, after you subtract inflation. Many of the last years you lost money in a CD. Sometimes a CD might be right if you are waiting for the right time to invest.

The key to investing.................Buy LOW Sell HIGH ................now to figure out if cattle are low or high.

Don't buy out of the paper, they're always higher priced. Go to the Auction Mart or the yards when they're having bred cow sales. Lots of guys have dispersals and you can get some really good cows quite cheap. And no, I can't think of anyone around here with cows for sale.
