I beg to disagree that auction marts are the place to buy cows-I won't buy there and I sure as heck won't sell good cattle there. I don't trust my program to some auction mart alley rat with a hotshot and a shoe size bigger than his I'Q. If you want some heifers breed like the kids 4H calves from last year I'll give you my nephews number I a'I'ed a pretty good set of heifers for them this sprng.

Now I have to disagrre with you both, NR and Kola. Last fall, best friend was buying cows, hit one major sale of two Simm dispersals, bought himself some nice young cows for dirt cheap and they are raising awesome calves. Hit another sale and bought himself a pile of black Simms and they turned out to be excellent cows, too. If you are choosy on what you buy, you do fine. The key to buying at sale barns is to buy from dispersals.

He got lucky-I've seen so many salebarn wrecks that it's not funny-as for selling there I'm not about to pay big money for somebody to do a poor job of representing my cattle. We sell out of the yard for a few hundred more than the salebarn brings. I was a feeder asociation supervisor for years saw alot of crap peddled back and forth. A dispersal of cattle you know might not be bad but most auction mart cows have seen more of Saskatchewan than I have.

Keep in mind I have a fixed budget.... like 1600 total to spend   I can spend more if he will sell a pair with a good heifer calf, so I won't have to go to another place to uy a heifer.

Thanks!

I have a good buddy at the auction mart that does some of the paperwork. He can get me a background check and put bids in on the stock for me.... and I wont buy anyhtign that I dont know about their background... fussy fussy me. lol.

Buy the least expensive, but good quality RED cows you can, breed them to your black bull.

You don't need to pay extra for black cows to make black calves, that is what the bull is for.

Actually, if I buy a red cow, it's going to be bred back to a red bull, because I solely think that red and black cattle are both equal, just different hides. Quality, not colour ;)
