What is this & what's it used for?

Antique farm equipment enthusists...

Is this a forge? If not, any idea what this is, and what it was used for? The crank still turns easily. Any responses are greatly appreciated!

Cheers--

It's a forge and blower, although all the ones I've seen have the same blower, but the part with the crank is different. Ours has the crank on the side of the blower.

Yep- that is a forge...We have one that we still use-believe it is the same brand, but it is like DJL says with the crank section (single handle) on the side of the blower...We used it for years heating branding irons, before the propane torch- when I was a little kid that was my job to turn the crank- Dad used to only hotshoe horses, and used it for that...Still fire it up once in a while to heat a chunk of metal to bend or something...Stoked up with coal and a little cranking and it flat gets hot......

Thanks DJL and OT! I assume the pipe off the bottom was then used to dispose of the ash. Am I right? Any idea how old the thing is? I see that the patent is for 1901 and 1902...but I assume that doesn't mean that it was built then.

lazy ace and I are both just so amazed that the crank still turns, and turns very easily.

Again, thanks so much...

Why are you amazed?

I've got my granddads and still use it on occasion.

The boys and I used to build quite a few things with it. Even got the where we could forge weld a little.

It was probabvly kept out of the moisture, so would still turn fairly easily.

They knew how to build things, when that was built!

True enough, the old stuff sure was built well. Any idea when this may have been built?

We were poking around in our iron graveyard and found it and some other cool stuff. There was probably 3 inches of soil on it. I imagine it's been "put to rest" out there for a long, long time. That's why we were so shocked. Heck at first I thought it was a mini tub for the washing part of a ringer washing machine. (They still sell those NEW where I was raised.) After I got some soil off of it, I soon knew I was wrong.

Again, thanks for all the insight...

TTB- google up Champion blower and forge-- several sites come up...One shows a model almost identical to that one that they call the "government or miners or prospectors model"- advertised in a catalog for sale around 1920...So they made them for some time.....

Ours looks like it is smaller, lighter, and easier to move around...Dad used to just call it a horseshoeing forge....

I have no idea when it was made. Check out the link OT showed you. :)

It's an antique sex toy.

Just set Lazy Ace up on it and turn the crank. He'll get a cheap thrill while having his cold one.

I built a grate to go over the top of our old forge and used it for a BBQ grill, you can get those coals going pronto with the blower.

As everyone else has said, it is a forge.

Earlier this year I went to a blacksmithing school, no not farrier work, I will never shoe a horse, to old for that. Now I know enough to be dangerous with a piece of hot iron, but it sure is fun building things.

Spent two hours yesterday making some tooling for the anvil. I think a lot of my Christmas is going to be hand made this year.

If you want to see what is being done in the blacksmithing world today, go to iforgeiron.com, forgemagic.com, or anvilfire.com. From Anvilfire go to the ABANA (Artist Blacksmith Association of North America) website and be completely blown away by what you can do with iron today.

If you want to see a value, go to ebay, do a search for blacksmith tools, blacksmith forge, or blacksmith anvil you would be surprised what is out there.

To keep those gears turning, put a lightweight oil in the oil hole. There is an on going discussion as to what is best, the ideas range from ATF to 90 weight. But if you turn for any length of time, the heavier oils sure wear out your arm in a hurry. Just be forewarned, those things leak, there is more than one reason it is called blacksmithing.

I have two forges, one is a champion, the other a Canedy Otto, but if you want to clean up the 'junk', let me know. To me it would be a treasure. I am looking for something more portable than the monsters I have.

Thanks for all the responses...even yours BMR

Pretty funny Shortstuff...lazy ace thought he could really grill on this thing too! When I first saw it, I was sure it would make a nice planter, but now that I have some idea that it works, it won't be a planter (trust me lazy ace is happy about that!)

When we get some snow we'll crank 'er up and see how well it works. We're still too worried about fire (had another this week) to be playing with fire and coals.

S. CO RANCHER...thanks for the tips on how to keep it in tip top shape. We'll have to get some oil in it. We'll have to check out the sites you listed. By the way...I was raised in a slightly warmer area to the west of you---Alamosa and Gunnison have to vie for some of the colder areas of the country. You might need a forge and blower to stay warm!

I think it's a 500 model, but not sure. I didn't take any pics of the front of the blower that shows the model number, but it does look a lot like that model. Thanks OT for the tip on how to find that out.

Well, thanks for all the education. I am thinking Lazy Ace's Granddad doesn't either know this is in the iron graveyard, or more likely, had forgotten. He and Grandma are very involved in the local historical society, who just put up a blacksmithing shop to do demonstrations. I am sure this jewel would be in there, if they'd remembered it.

Have a wonderful Sunday and upcoming week....it looks like it'll be another beautiful day in the Dakota prairieland.

Cheers---

I think the amount of enjoyment would depend on if you had a gal to crank it or if you had to crank it yourself !!!!

I hope I didn't upset you Big Muddy because when we met in Deadwood it was interesting to talk to you. It was one of those things that I had to do. Sorry.

I didn't say a great sex toy. Also don't light the fire before you sit cause that could ruin all future fun.

Don't worry, I know the comments made here are all in good fun. It was just getting boring with everybody saying "Yup that's a forge' 'I remember when" ect. I was just trying to liven things up in a small way.
By the way that was a good come back.
