Calling Out Rep. Schock in Peoria [Greg Pollowitz]
When I read the write-up in the New York Times of President Obama's visit to the Caterpillar plant in Peoria, Illiniois, I thought this treatment of Representative Schock was out of line:
Mr. Obama used the event to try to round up another Republican vote for his stimulus package. He singled out from the crowd Representative Aaron Schock of Illinois, who recently won the Congressional seat vacated by Ray LaHood, a Republican who is now transportation secretary.
“Aaron’s still trying to make up his mind about our recovery package,” Mr. Obama told the crowd, laughing. “We know that all of you are going to talk to him after our event, because he’s a very talented young man. I’ve got great confidence in him to do the right thing for the people of Peoria.”
Schock answered today on the House floor and related that not a single worker approached him after Obama's talk asking him to support the spending bill. He also received more than1,400 emails and phone calls and letters from Caterpillar workers telling him to vote no. Via MKH:
And if you don't believe Schock, the Los Angeles Times found worker enthusiasm for Obama lacking as well:
