What now?

A 17-year-old Kaiser High School student in California has a GPA of 4.09. She has taken Advanced Placement classes, the toughest in her high school. She's a member of the Army Junior ROTC. She's also a member of the National Honor Society and a president of the Advanced Biology Club. She's worked hard and it paid off - she's been accepted to UC Berkeley.

The problem?

She's an illegal alien. Gladys Castro came illegally to the United States with her family when she was eight years old. She has no Social Security number - she is not a US citizen.

Now Gladys Castro wants to go to UC Berkeley but can't afford the $30,000 a year in tuition. She can't apply for government loans because she is in the country illegally. Without the government - which has already paid $100,000 to educate her for the last ten years - Gladys says that she can't afford to go to college.

So what now, do we do something , ship her home, bend a few rules, give her citizenship...what?

Personally I think some private groups could step up and help her. Maybe even some latino groups could help. Surely there are some groups that could help or give her a loan for college. JMO

“I don’t know how I’m going to pay for school,” she said. “All I want is a chance.”

when you read her life story,.. so far she has been blessed, and I feel for her.. and all the citizens of Mexico..

on the other side.. I am paying for my son's education. even with scholarships and grants.. it is a hefty bill,, one we can barely afford.

his GPA was a bit higher.. and he was accepted to a much better school.. he took advanced placement tests.. and his mother came over here "legally"

we went through the process.. getting permission to get married, waiting for approval of her visa's and even separation as she could not accompany me back when I returned stateside..

would Gladys Castro have been better off staying in Mexico or risking deportation here? clearly the answer is no..

so now the question is.. do we deal with the problem... Mexican violence and poverty.. or deal with the people who have made it here and saw no other option?

The law is the law. She should be sent back to Mexico. Give her a break and then all the others will be given some sort of a break.

Extreme pressure should be placed on the Mexicsan governement who, IMO, is soley responsible for the illegal immigration in the first place.

Have any of you sat down and talked with any of these illegal immigrants? I have. The vast majority are hard working people who have famulies back in Mexico trying to live on nothing. The illegal works here, makes money, go to the nearest Western Union office, transfers the money (except for a little he holds back for rent) back to his family in Mexico. That money then gets spent there. There is no reason for their government to intervene. In fact, they encourage it by not intervening. They want the American dollars to keep flowing into their country.

Here is a what i may call a solution.....As it benefits us all to educate poorer countries, why not offer "out of country" grants to students of poorer countries to put towards Internet studies done by our universities....try a venture between governments (Mexico,USA and Canada)of splitting cost and getting paid back through loan payments and a better educated society...Both Canada and the USA should think about helping educate the people of Mexico so they can build a better country and enjoy living there...Rather then sneaking into the USA...Just a thought

A nice thought and I would agree! Mexico has to stimulate opportunity within its borders to create a desire, among the general population, to stay. With a corrupt government, that's not going to happen. Meanwhile, we have to deal with being overrun.

It's a very unfortunate situation for the kid to be in, but "sponsoring" their education here in the states only provides more incentive for thousands more to come in.

Saw on the news, a teenage boy in Kansas City, illegal immigrant, that needs a heart transplant and of course the family has no money and no health insurance.

What a predicament these parents have created for their children. The human toll is heartbreaking but that still doesn't make it right to accomodate illegal aliens. Making it ok to stay here after you have snuck in illegally and gotten caught is like saying if the bank leaves the vault open, it's ok to go ahead and take the money???

Did she go on any of the JROTC trips? How did she get clearance?
How did she go to school with NO SSN? Sorry but the innercity school I worked at after 10 days no SSN, no shots, no birth cert, no school.
Dont mean to be harsh but send her back. She is more than welcome to come over the RIGHT way.
