What would you do?

My question is "What would you do?" I could write a letter to the paper; or simply forget about it and not let it get to me. Here's the situation:

We are a unit school district of 910 students, so we are very rural. We have some industry in our county but it is pretty much a bedroom community with agriculture a prominent part of our economy. We are in central Illinois.

This past Thursday was junior high graduation at our local school. As the graduates entered, everyone stood up. Then the principal asked everyone to remain standing for the presentation of colors and national anthem. As the color guard entered, a man and wife of mexican descent sat down and continued sitting through the national anthem. As the color guard left, they stood up again. Then the entire audience sat down.

Now, I didn't see this event, but two people told me this occurred. They were quite upset as was I when I found this out. I serve on the school board and would like to voice MY opinion as a citizen, but I am reluctant to do so because of my position on the board.

What angers me even more is that one yound 8th grader of Mexican descent WON the American Legion award. I am not sure if this was their son or not. Pretty ironic if it is their son, huh?

I don't want to be a jerk, but they are in the "Land of the Free" because they CHOSE to be here. Their supposed protest should NOT be with America and its flag, but with their own native country. If life was so wonderful in Mexico, why did they leave?

What would you do? Thanks in advance for your thoughtful opinions.
BTW, I don't want this to become a political issue, but rather a moral, ethical issue.

Do you know this was done in protest?

Were they an older couple unable to stand for continual periods of time maybe...and just stood and the beginning and end?

And is your source for your facts a source you consider reliable and fair minded?

As for writing a letter or letting it go.....you gotta do whatever makes YOU feel better.

If it were me, I'd let it go...after all it is America!!!

I've seen PLENTY of Americans all over the world disrespect the ' mores' and culture of foreign countries...so I guess what's fair for the goose if fair for the gander!

Disrespect is uncalled for no matter where you are in the world....but it's a fact of life.

As related I believe he feels it is a safe bet or he would not have bothered posting

Come on now, what are the chances of this happening at this very moment in the ceremony. Now don't cop out on this.........

And is your source for your facts a source you consider reliable and fair minded?
Like he posted this with unreliable in formation, don't cop out on this and take the easy out.

As for writing a letter or letting it go.....you gotta do whatever makes YOU feel better
Well said (what country paid for this education....as a side not)

If it were me, I'd let it go...after all it is America!!!
That's what is great about this country, ain't it........you can do what you want, as EVERYONE else can also.

I've seen PLENTY of Americans all over the world disrespect the ' mores' and culture of foreign countries...so I guess what's fair for the goose if fair for the gander!
Ya like a few do something so it makes it right..........another cop out for disrespectful behavior

Disrespect is uncalled for no matter where you are in the world....but it's a fact of life

Well, Passin' Thru you should know about disrespect!

You make my questions look like some type of ' excuse'....which was not my intention. The question was asked....I answered, PERIOD. I didn't try to take the post and turn it around in to a snappy scarcastic tirade....you just did that.

Have you never seen older people stand up just at the beginning of a prayer in church, a function or ceremony...then sit down then get up again?? I have...it happens a lot.

I'm beginning to believe so many here, including you, are in a constant state of PMS or something....you can't even make a simple, innocent post without getting jumped on.

Chief: Sorry I took your post off to the side for a moment....

I would just think to myself that they are ignorant and dont know any better. Then I would think about something else.

Well Sir,I agree it was wrong and disrespectful, and I sure hope the young man that won the award wasn't represented by these people. That being said,I guess thats why we have democratic societies,so rude ignorant people can have just as much right to thier say, weather we think its right or wrong!

lady I did not disrespect you, I answered your excuses for their behavior. If you can not see that then your biases are blinding your thinking.

I am sorry but yes you did, statementw by the author was followed by an excuse..............and yes it was an excuse on your part......unless you are blinded by your biases.

Yes I have, however you seem to ignore the timing og the tired spells by these people............unless you are blinded by your biases.

I say someone is in a state of PMS when chief posts a question and you have to jump in with your EXCUSES.............and yes they are excuses..........unless you are blinded.

I still bet the Mexican gov paid for their education

Of course we all know it, the question is will you be MAN enough to admit your preconceived biases.

Your snappy PMS response is expected when you were called on your biases, but will be ignored.........I prefer to talk to someone with an open mind. It doesn't meen I won't laugh at your biases.

On a final note I find it real interesting that you FORGOT to mention where I agreed with you...........so sad that you had to be antagonistic and fail to note these.

Chief----I wish I could give you some advise on how to handle this touchy situation.....I, too, live in a very patriotic and very rural area (our school district has a total of roughly 230-250 students K-12) and this sort of behavior would not have been tolerated....some "good old boy" probably would have confronted them afterward in the parking lot!!!  Yes, we are lucky enough to live in a country where many, many young men and women have sacrificed everything to give us the freedom of speech and many other freedoms...including, unfortunately, the freedom to disrespect our flag!!

Well thank you one and all. I guess 8)

They were NOT an old couple about to collapse. They were parents. Sorry I didn't make that clear. But if they were tired, funny how it happened at the time it did, huh?

I have decided to let it go. My "protest" is to redesign my flag holder (old one wasn't working the best anymore) and I flew my flag all day yesterday and today.

Yes, they have freedom to speak, protest, worship, or sit on their a$$ if they want. But they did NOT have that until they got to AMERICA. So if America is being "mean-spirited" to them because we won't recognize the National Anthem sung in Spanish (or whatever it was they were FREELY protesting), then I suggest they find accomadations where all their needs are met.

Hasta la vista, baby. 8)

they have every right to protest. and I would have went out side, introduced myself, and told them I had the right to defend myself in court, then beat the hell out of them.

I ain't one to beat on a woman, but if I could find Sharon Jean Mercer, she may lay a lick or two on the gal.

seriously, these sumbitches come up here and want US to conform toTHIER culture....I call bull, we better get off our asses and defend what we have left, because this country is slipping away and the masses are to blind to see it!

Had I actually seen it, I would write something to the effect of being disappointed (particularly since it was so close to Memorial Day and all), but a tirade wouldn't really accomplish what I'd be after. All it would do is further divide people.

But I guess for my part I wouldn't say a word about something that I didn't personally witness.

PS: I can't help but wonder what we'd be called if a district with 900 some odd kids is "very rural"...

NOW That is funny. Thanks.

Our entire county is one school district (prek-12) We are the smallest county in the state of Illinois. But yes, I imagine we are very "large" compared to some of you. It's all relative, I guess.

AS I have posted before, there is RESPONSIBILITY for our freedom of speech. For example, I walk up to the town bully, practice my freedom of speech and tell him to go [email protected]# himself... You think that person would let me walk free without forcing me to pay some kind of price??? People who do horrible things like stomp on the flag, burn it, curse American citizens, curse out President, curse our troops DESERVE to pay some kind of price for their friggen' big, obnoxious, FREEDOM OF SPEECH mouths.

There, 'nuff said.
