lilly are you serious that your banker looked at the cows.ive never had them look at any cows ive bought.i just go in an tell them what im looking at an what i wanna do,an they say go get them.an let me know how meny head i got.

I wondered that too!

But they will come looking sometimes when you borrow and use your stock as collateral.

Saw my dad take them and show them 3-4 neighbors cows when he needed a loan once.

I've never been to a banker is saskabush. So it will be interesting. In BC unless you have 500,000 just sitting in the bank collecting dust they won't give you a thing. Prime example. I am employed same job 6 years, good credit score and a 40 acre chunk of paid off land. Can I get a loan here, No way recent divorce under 3 years! Apparently I am a credit-flight risk :( I also have about 160,000 worth of Thoroughbreds kicking around. They have no value at all due to the fact they are horses and are not considered livestock any longer in BC. Burns my butt, I am hoping I will be treated with more dignity at one of the smaller banks in SK. Pretty frustrating though.grrrr. O well if I have to buy cows one and a time I will... Pretty stubborn you know.

Banks are going to want you to have 30% down for land and the cattle will be valued at going rates and they margin up to 80%.

Feed inventory and supplies are extras that should be on hand.

Horses aren't considered collateral unless they are valued at salvage prices. That is unless you are one of the few that can show regular sales of the offspring for good dollars. many $25,000 horses never return a nickel.

As for buying heifers vs cows. Good cows are usually only sold at dispersals. Heifers are not proven, but more often are better value if bought from a decent source.

Judith: The banks aren't much different over here; you'd better have a pretty good business plan and a bunch of equity to get anywhere! Some of the credit unions are a bit more approachable but they really vary; Farm Credit is fairly aggressive when lending but you'd better have things lined up properly. That being said there are real buying opportunities all across the province, just pick your desired location. Probably the cheapest Ag land left in N. America.........you might have to seed and fence some but it will raise livestock quite well!
BTW the Can. Hereford Assoc. is running a PB marketing seminar in Sept. at the Cypress Hills resort. This would be an excellent chance to examine the PB business, evaluate marketing opportunities and network with some very progressive breeders........I would definately consider such a course before purchasing any livestock!

It must take alot of Thoroughbred's to add up to $160,000 here you can buy washed up race horses for kill price not very profitable.I would sell the horses buy the cows and stay out of debt...

I have some $100,000 Quarter Horses too-- but I ain't found the idiot to give me that much yet...

With Thoroughbreds you have to have good ones. There is no middle and no bottom to the market. You have to breed for the elite market. Ship your horses to KY for the sales.Sell em local and you lose your shirt. You MUST have a stallion that has a dam and granddam that were blacktype. Alot of people get cheap claimers bred them and loose tons of money. You have to know what you are doing. Someone paid 180,000 US for my stallion. He then went on to have a long and profitable racing career. Then they got tired of him and guess what now I have him, his kids are starting to run and are doing well. If you go through other peoples trash to find treasure , make sure your looking in the millionares garbage. You have to know the industry and breathe pedigrees. It is not a market for the uneducated. Nope I won't be selling the horses, too much money in it.

If there's so much coin in it why mess with cows.I've built trailers for people for the last 17 years the one sure thing is HORSE PEOPLE have champage taste on cheap beer budgets.....

I do just fine with the ponies. If you look on my website you will see that in just stallion owner and breeder awards I do just fine. Stud fees are $2500.00 per service and then you have mare care @ 15 per day. Really not too bad at all. But seriously i have seen ALOT of people lose there shirts with horses. (Shirts, Husbands, Wives)

Why mess with cattle you say? It's all about lifestyle and making a dime. No I dont have crazy dreams or aspirations just want a quieter life than I have been leading. Corporate life is just not my world.

The thoroughbred racing world is all about who can pay the most for a horse. These people have more money than you and I can even imagine. They will simply outbid each other cuz they can, no other reason. The last sale I was at in KY had a colt go for 5 million in the blink of an eye. Just too bad it wasnt out of my barn...dam. Sad devil about the biz is that they are treated as disposable objects, as soon as the fun is over they are sent to slaughter. Imagine a horse winning over a million for his owner and then sent to the canner. If I ever have one do that for me he will be sleeping in my bed, eating peppermints on a daily basis!
Northern is right though I get calls for people wanting chuck wagon horses all the time. Those guys pay crazy money for the right horse.

I was browsing equine now this morning saw a mare that went through action for $800.00 they have put her price at $40,000. Now that's a PT barnam sale if ever I saw one. I will be really interested to see what she sells for. I have always said horse people are nuts (this includes myself). Interesting side note is that I would rather ride a Morgan anyday than one of these dopes. My up an coming colt is appendix out of a cow horse nice little fellow. Sorry babbling need coffee.

So again the question Judith, why mess with cows if the horses are making you money?

You haven't got a chance making more than a few thousand bucks even if you get started right at the top.

If the horse thing looks like it is going to drop off, then investing in cows as you can afford them might be best.

The cows will tend to split your focus and might cause you to lose in the horses.

good advice! The TB market goes in waves. 1980 was the worst anyone has ever seen. Dropped again and was a buyers market last year. (score for this little blue duck :) This year is up again. Who knows what tommorow will bring. Last year a few of the major players passed on and then we had that weird thing with the mares aborting in KY. I think they linked it to tent caterpillers. don't quote me on that one though.

Why mess with cows? To some people that's like asking, "Why mess with food?" Or breathing air.

Some folks just have it in their blood to want to mess with cows...of course, once you run enough of that blood out on barbed wire, into bruises, and out of your pores, sometimes the messing with cows part runs out with it. You can get cured of this blood disease in short order. Having to fix up a few miles of fence will do it for sure as will a kick.

Standing around watching your cows eat, calves nurse, a bull sniffing around, etc. while you lean against the bed of a pickup just does something for some folks. And if you can loop a few years together of decent auction checks, a couple of decent private treaty sales, and even some rain, hell, you might even break even.

Best of luck! BTW, I recommend the breed that is most common in your area and sells easiest. Go to a commercial auction and just watch what people are buying. At first you may not be able to tell what they are looking for as it all goes within a few pennies per pound difference. After a while, with good notes, you will see that maybe baldies are paying a few cents more a pound, or longer bodies, etc. It is different everywhere--you have to see what sells in your neck of the woods.

Well said Kwebb! You read my mind :) Some of us also really like the challenge of genetics. Pedigrees are like a puzzle to me I love to work them.
