What's the word on the Patriot Act?

I don't know much about the Patriot Act but I am suspicious of it. I suppose if I went onto Alex Jones's website I could find some bad things about it. But what good has the Patriot Act ever really accomplished?

So we go from:

The Patriot Act is worse than it first appears to be. Part of the reason the 9/11 attack was staged was to launch The War on Terror and The Patriot Act.

Thanks LB. I think I now know what I need to know.

I fell for the official 9/11 story, didn't even realize there was significant opposition to it until 2008. I didn't really become a "truther" until this year.

Have you been personally affected by the Patriot Act LB?
Not that I can think of right away, but it would be stupid of me to approve of it wholeheartedly.

Nice of you to argue a point that wasn't made, but we'll skip that for now.

Here's my point about the Patriot Act:

Shamu said:
It allows the police/gvt agents to come into your house without a warrent and beat the s*** out of you, tear up your house, arrest you without cause other than resisting arrest, and put you in prison and not pay you back for any damage...pretty good law right?

Since you and Shamu appear to frequent similar websites; websites dedicated to revealing the "truth" about our government and its direct involvement in 9-11 and the murder of thousands of American citizens, I would assume that you guys would be the first to have been targeted by an act that would allow gvt agents to kick down your doors and beat the crap out of you without a warrant.

Have you spoken LB to anyone on any of those sites who've had a bad experience (rights taken away via the Patriot Act)?

Just wondering.

Whitewing, I really don't think this is a good argument. Our most recent and outrageous abuse of this argument was with Hitler and the Jews. If it didn't affect a non Jew, you were encouraged to not worry about it.

I think when we allow acts that are not overseen by another branch of government, we allow ourselves to be open to government abuse with no way of determining whether the "Jews" of the day are being taken in a train to a rendering facility.

We protect other people's rights not because we like other people, but because in protecting those rights, we protect our own.

Well Tex, I simply asked Lightninboy if he could site any examples of the Patriot Act infringing on his rights or the rights of anyone he knew. So far, it hasn't affected him from what he's said. I do understand though the point you're trying to make.

We've discussed here the possible illegal mining of telephone information and perhaps other potential abuses, but those seem a far cry from the kicking down of the doors and stomping the crap out of people that Shamu has mentioned.

To a degree, this topic reminds me of the argument my now-dead brother (an attorney) often had with my parents about random road blocks looking for drunk drivers, illegal weapons, drugs etc. He was against them, my parents didn't care because they knew they weren't going to be driving drunk, carry illegal weapons, or doing drugs.

Also, talking about mining information. I recall walking into an AutoZone Auto Parts store one day in Mississippi and asking about replacing an alternator on a pickup. The guy asked me my home phone number (in Louisiana) and with that alone proceeded to rattle off data about me that left me with my mouth hanging open.

My point, we're getting mined every single day by far more than our gubmint, and probably with far greater potential negative consequences.

Yep, you are right about that, the same thing happened to me in Louisiana but over a different auto part.

Even the grocery stores find out your habits with their store cards and such. Same with credit cards and it seems iphones.

I do worry about government, though. I don't like so much intrusion with the retail world but at least there they do not have the power to make you buy or do anything. The government does have powers under the Patriot Act that could take the rights away from anyone they don't agree with or whoever doesn't agree with them.

That is too much power to not have oversight and a lot of it.

All of the voters are supposed to be keeping tabs on their representatives in government to keep them on the straight and narrow, not the other way around.

And yes, I totally agree with law enforcement and government keeping track of potential wrong doers but with OVERSIGHT and ACCOUNTABILITY. Those two things are what is missing in the Patriot Act and that we need to worry about.

Sham just wondering have you had your door kick in lately? With all the tossing of opinions around claiming them as facts you do, I would think you would have had a big fat target on your door! Or does the thick rubber liner you have around your room keep the coppers from entering?
