You remember the pet food poisoning deal we had here? People wanted to know that Chinese wheat gluten - as in FROM CHINA - wasn't used in the pet foods that were made here. Where the food was made wasn't the issue, where the ingredients came from clearly was!

And what if the wheat was grown in the US and processed in China? Under your new origin laws, that gluten would still be poisonous, but would be listed as a product of the US. Is that fair?

What people really want is SAFE FOOD or CHEAP FOOD. And you and I both know that when it comes to beef, where its processed accounts for 99.9999% of the safety issues. To suggest origin is a primary concern for consumers, when it comes to beef anyway, is only a lie. There are absolutely NO polls that suggest consumers want origin on beef.

The most important poll is the one politicians take every two years...if their constituents(voters/consumers) didn't want COOL, we wouldn't have it because the big business lobbyist didn't want it.

I think you are playing the same games as OT on Political Bull!

Here is a possible  real reason for the decline in the price of cattle (from Drovers)...

Boxed-beef weekly volume (fab loads)...
2007.................1,099
last 3 months....1,010
Last month..........906

Notice a trend? I bet the packers do!!!!!

Remember the tomatos and peppers that sickened and killed so many....That were finally tracked down to Mexico- and found that they had been brought in from Mexico and generically mixed with domestic product when processed- losing their origin identity.....But only after sickening hundreds- ruining the demand for tomatos and costing the US tomato growers Billions $...
I watched the Congressional Hearings on those- and consumers and consumer groups are screaming for country origin to remain with the product just because of such incidents- and the mistrust with many imported products- especially Mexican and Asian.....

The only game being played here is the one thats being played by R-Quackers and their pet politicians.

OT, raw product and processed beef are two completely animals.

What I'm wondering about is why there are only 35 votes in the poll out of 1,800+ views. I voted, and it's not that difficult, folks. Also, I realize that, the way the options read, it's kinda easy to say "those options don't really fit together and it seems like a different set would have been more meaningful."

For the sake of validating or invalidating the poll, it would be interesting to hear from a few of you as to why you didn't vote.

Happy New Year everyone!

It's why I didn't vote...what would be the point?

HAPPY NEW YEAR :!: :cowboy: :drink: :)

Far as beef is concerned, it isn't the country that matters, so much as the rules and inspection of the product. Countries exporting to the USA must meet the same rules and regs as does US produced beef.

There is NOTHING in COOL that improves the safety of any product, only the PERCEPTION of safety for those who believe all US produced beef is absolutely safe and no beef prduced in any other country can be so, IMO.

A true COOL law would require ID of producer as well as country, processors and all who handle the raw, unpackaged product, IMO. How much pseudo safety can we afford? How many foodborne illnesses have been PROVEN to be from beef and not from someone handling the product, in say, the past year?
