Millions of cows being chased into a pit to be shot makes good press???

No one said shoot them. Run them through the slaughter system over a period of a year or two and test them all. Get this BSE crap hopefully behind us.

And do what with the meat once they are tested. What do you think would happen to the price of beef and young fat cattle when all that meat hits the markets. Think about that we can't get a good price for the old cows and now you want to flood the market with meat so the price of beef drops and we can't get a decent price for the young fat cattle either. Answer this Would you fix every teenage boy in a High School because a teenage girl got pregnant or would you do what you could to educate and lessen the risk of it happening again. Why would we kill off healthy cattle by the millions just because of a few? Why not lessen the risk with precautionary measure like feed bans and testing and SRM removal and allow these animals to be culled in do time without the damage done that a mass cull would cause. The US producers were worried about the flood of Canadian live cattle would do to your market what do you think a flood of every over 8 year old cow would do?

We shouldn't even think of opening it to OTM's or breeding stock until we get our BSE firewall gaps closed: ban the feeding of chicken litter- ban the feeding of table scraps to ruminants- ban the use of blood in milk replacer and other products which may be consumed by ruminants- and proof that these bans are being complied with...

Also we need to have the mandatory ID plan up and running with forced compliance- so that we know where these cows are and where they go....
Ban cattle from another country because the US has lower standards?

Why would that only make sense to an R-Calfer?
Don't you just love it. They are willing to destroy those that have proven to be better at keeping up with the times while they play catchup.

Tam- I know in your paranoid state you think R-CALF shut down the border just to bankrupt Canadian ranchers- but remember it was done by the US government for consumer and herd health.....Even if we have BSE, It should not be opened until we get the firewalls in place to guarantee bringing in more cattle from a country that has BSE doesn't further spread the disease....

Just because we have one rattlesnake living under the porch and we've luckily avoided his bite doesn't mean we should bring in a den of rattlesnakes to live with him and make the odds worse.....

I know you don't care what happens because you already have admitted you have US "contraband" cattle you can't trace in your herd- and your posts have been wishing for years to put us in the same boat as you are in-- a wish against your former countrymen-- but personally I would like to have the safeguards in place before we add to the risk factor......Why should we have to lower ourselves to your level???

I have not forgotten that BSE was the cause but who fought the USDA in court to keep it shut and lost on every argument they filed on. Can you say R-CALF Oldtimer.
Sounds to me like you are the paranoided one when it comes to the risk of BSE. If your system cannot you protect from imported cattle what makes you think you are protected from the native cases of BSE. You have been telling people all along that Canadian beef should be labeled so people know they are at risk by eating it. Are you also ready to ID your cattle and label it as US not just label the imported, so people know they are now taking a chance with their lives if they eat US Beef instead of eating beef from a country like Canada that did not screw up the testing in two out of two native cases.
You should really talk to someone about those imaginary rattlesnakes Oldtimer that could be cause for concern.
contraband" cattle you can't trace in your herd
yea they came from the US so if they come up with BSE I guess we will be looking in your back yard for the sourse not mine.
and your posts have been wishing for years to put us in the same boat as you are in--
Wishing and warning are two different things Oldtimer.

we need to have the mandatory ID plan
Canada's got that
until we get our BSE firewall gaps closed
Canada's firewalls are stricter
ban the feeding of chicken litter
We did that back in 1998
ban the feeding of table scraps to ruminants-
1998 too
ban the use of blood in milk replacer and other products which may be consumed by ruminants-
Canada is also working on this if it is not through already it shouldn't be long
and proof that these bans are being complied with...
Yep we inspect very year and have good history of compliance.

By your own quotes how can you say you would be lowering yourself to our level? You are already lower or did you forget that we have a National ID system and we banned Chicken litter and plate waste and the USDA and the NCBA came to inspect for themselves to varify the CFIA reports of compliance. R-CALF says they don't want the US to become a dumping ground for meat that no one else will take. Well no one wants yours either but Canada is taking it, and we don't need it as we have plenty of our own but you on the other hand need ours to meet domestic demand and if you do open any export markets you will need even more to cover those markets. So live with it Oldtimer

with the many documented cases of "feed ban" violations you could make a case for starting that process this year after Canada assures us they have a regulatory agency in place, that will assure the "USA" that the feed ban is being complied with

So how does Many compare to the 1200 feed violations by U.S companies the F.D.A found In 2003

In the medical profession, the first line of action when confronted with a disease of unknown origin and cause is quarantine. Why have animal practitioners failed to follow this time proven practice?
