Atlantic City, NJ is being swamped.

Chris Christie is saying they won't be able to help anybody that stayed, for quite some time.

he is probably testing those jet ski's right in the middle of the storm!

Some photos of The Wildwoods this morning and a few from Cape May yesterday during the storm.

...I always tell people I am "from" South Dakota... that way they don't confuse me with the average Northeast liberals

Our home is in Wildwood.. about 45 miles south of Atlantic City...

so far it looks as if we dodged the bullet down here.. the winds were high and shifted offshore as the hurricane made it's approach..

and Like last years Irene it was not technically a hurricane when it hit landfall..

as for damage... we had flooding up to about the front door and several feet in my shop...

everything in the shop was either up on the second floor or up above the three foot mark on shelves or the bench..

our crawl space still has a few inches of water in it.. and our power is a bit sketchy.. we have one leg.. (110volts) and the other is an eerie brownout ... it looks as if it is on the electric company side.. but they are a bit busy so I just shut off the breakers on that side..

our A/C unit had moved a few feet.. but was not under water.. it is fairly sheltered from the wind.. so I have a feeling someone was trying to steal it...

the curfew and emergency order are still in effect so I didn't drive around to see how the rest of the county is.. and probably won't for a few days ...

I've been worried sick!!! I know he's prolly swinging off the poles and lines like the old sea dog he is, but poor annie, I do hope she's high and dry..

Annie is high and dry... and between her and a few friends had a great time.. they played scrabble and baked cookies.. we watched the storm on TV and wondered what all the fuss was about...

we were really fortunate.. had it been 50 or sixty miles south of where it hit.. on it's original track to hit Rohobeth Beach Delaware you would be seeing parts of Wildwood floating on TV instead of Atlantic city..

Thanks for checking in with us Steve, so we can quit worrying about you an Annie. Happy for you that your house/shop hasn't sustained damage.

We have friends in Conn. and we can't get ahold of them by phone.
So that's a worry, but I'm sure they had to leave. He is on kidney dialysis
which makes it worse for them.

Yeah!!!!!!!!! Snoopy Dance everyone!!!!!!!! Glad everything is okay buddy!!! Now I can check that one worry off and go on down the list.. Pictures.. We need pictures..

I will try to get a few later.. a neighbor took some and is sending me a few..

has Zilly returned.. he may have been hit worse then we were..

we had about 12 inches of rain recorded. (when the ocean is at your door it really doesn't seem like much)..

not sure how much he had,.. but many inland areas are flooded and a few bridges are closed still..

Hey Steve, glad to hear things aren't too bad.

Here in Salem county, it wasn't much more than a rain event. Not sure how much we received, but it wasnt all that much. The Delaware did spill her banks due to high tide, but for the most part everything is A okay.

The Philly news coverage is bordering on rediculous, but would love to see more images from the northern shore points. The few I have seen show some serious damage. Here's what Seaside Heights looked like this morning.

ocean+coaster.jpg

one of the images that may become iconic of this storm..

in New Jersey we have piers.. they often do not even get to the ocean,.. and are not for tieing up boats or fishing off off.. they are amusement parks over the beaches.. and most have been around for generations..

the picture above is a roller coaster that is now sitting in the ocean.. the entire pier was wiped out, and the roller coaster swept out into the ocean..

several towns are in shambles.. while even I am not a fan of building on barrier islands. the devastation is humbling..

The sad thing about this storm is that in some areas you will have a second storm. The human storm, who knows what it will all be but it is coming. The bright spot is that there will be great acts of kindness.
Probably it is hard for the normal person to even comprehend the devastation this has caused, pictures won't tell it all.

some of their comments have been really stupid... like the girl standing on a floating dock commenting about how it was ripped from a nearby building..
as the building was clearly not on the water, I doubt it had a dock.. :?

and later describing people walking on the boardwalk.. yep those folk are walking.. and it is after the storm.. but really is that news?

and the repetitive pictures of reporters standing on docks, seawalls and swells telling others to stay home and not go out as it is dangerous..

several had to be rescued again...

our mayor threatened to arrest them last year during Irene and they seemed to have gotten the hint..

boats are no match for the storm surges..

in Queens 50 homes burnt because fire fighting equipment couldn't get to the homes due to flooding, and water pressure was lost due to power outages..
breezypoint-550.jpg

we had a similar problem here a few years back as a few dozen homes were lost,. now all of our local fire departments have jet fire fighting boats they have one jet pump to run the boat, and another to shoot water to the fire..

it is hard to describe.. but in Sea side heights beach actual sand has swamped the towns beach area.. some with several feet of sand filling the homes and streets.

similar situation in Cape May to the south of us

capemay-550.jpg

yes that is a normal street sign.. the friends we stayed with daughter has a picture of her standing by the street sign.. it is below her waist.. about three foot at most sticking out of the sand..
